Cuban Roots, American Heart

I arrived as a little girl from Cuba… and grew up to live the American dream.

Poem by DVG

I arrived as a little girl

from my beloved Cuba,

with a small suitcase

and a deep hope inside.

My parents carried courage,

even though fear walked beside them. They left family and memories for a brighter tomorrow.

I grew up through struggle and work, learning never to give up,

building step by step

the life I now embrace.

But my greatest pride

is not what I achieved alone.

It is watching my children grow

and seeing their dreams take flight.

Because everything we are today

was born from an act of faith,

from those who left their homeland believing in what could be.

Reflection:

Coming to the United States from Cuba was not just changing countries. It was starting life from the very beginning.

Many of us arrived with no money, no property, and no certainty about what the future would hold. We left behind our island, our roots, and often people we loved deeply. The only things we carried with us were hope, faith, and the determination to work hard and build a better life.

In many places in the world, starting with nothing means remaining with nothing. But in this great nation there is something extraordinary: opportunity. The opportunity to work with dignity, to rise after every fall, and over time build a better life.

Today I can proudly say that I am Cuban American. I carry in my heart the strength and history of Cuba, but also a deep gratitude for the United States — the country where I grew up and where my children have been able to thrive.

The true greatness of this nation lies in that truth: that a little girl who arrived from Cuba with almost nothing can one day watch her children succeed and realize that her parents’ sacrifice was not in vain.

That is the true American Dream.

God bless the United States of America.

dejaron familia y recuerdos

por un mañana más bello.

Crecí entre lucha y trabajo,

aprendiendo a no rendirme jamás,

construyendo paso a paso

... Read moreArriving in the United States as an immigrant from Cuba is more than just a change in geography—it's an experience filled with both challenge and hope. Like many Cuban immigrants, my family started with very little: a small suitcase and a profound hope for a better future. The courage that my parents showed, despite the fear of the unknown, inspired me deeply as I grew up in this new land. Building a life from scratch is never easy. It required perseverance, dedication, and a willingness to embrace opportunities even when uncertainty loomed large. I learned firsthand that the American dream is not simply a given but something earned through hard work and sacrifice. Watching my parents' resilience gave me the strength to overcome obstacles and strive for success—not only for myself but for future generations. One of the most beautiful aspects of this journey is seeing the next generation flourish. My children, born and raised in the United States, have been able to pursue their dreams in ways that would have been impossible without the sacrifices made before them. This continuation of hope and achievement embodies the essence of the true American dream—a dream rooted in faith, opportunity, and unwavering determination. For many immigrants, leaving behind their homeland means also leaving behind their cultural identity. Yet, it is possible to carry Cuban roots in your heart while fully embracing an American life. This blending of cultures enriches not only our personal identity but also adds to the diversity and strength of this nation. Reflecting on this personal experience, I realize that the chance to start anew in a land of opportunity is a gift that should never be underestimated. It is a testament to the enduring human spirit—the faith in possibility and the courage to build a brighter tomorrow, no matter where you begin. I share this story to honor all immigrants who embark on similar journeys, emphasizing that starting from nothing in a new country can indeed lead to a life filled with hope, dignity, and success. The American dream lives on through each of us who dare to believe and work towards it.
