The city was famously buried under ash and pumice when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, preserving its buildings, artifacts, and even the impressions of its inhabitants. One of the highlights is entering through the historic Porta Marina entrance, which leads you straight into the heart of the ancient ruins. Walking around, you can see the impressive amphitheater, streets, and homes that reveal daily life in Roman times. The ruins provide a vivid insight into the city's structure, social organization, and the sudden impact of the volcanic disaster. What makes Pompeii especially captivating is how it reflects a moment frozen in history. For me, the most moving part was seeing the plaster casts of victims caught in the eruption, making the tragedy feel real and personal. If you're planning a visit, I recommend allotting several hours to fully explore the extensive archaeological park. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as there is a lot of walking on uneven surfaces. Also, taking a guided tour or renting an audio guide can enrich your visit with fascinating stories and context behind the ruins. Aside from the ruins themselves, the site offers a unique blend of history, tragedy, and resilience, showcasing the extraordinary power of nature and the rich human stories preserved beneath layers of ash.
