4 things that WILL make your cat happy!
1- DAILY playtime! floor toys should always be available, and the best way to keep those toys “fresh” can be achieved through moving toys around every couple days, and having a smaller number of available toys that are completely rotated every couple weeks. every cat has a preferred interactive play style, even cats that “don’t like to play.” try out different toy sizes, materials, and movement styles! some cats prefer something light that flies through the air, or something long that slithers around. think about how different prey moves in the wild—flying, crawling, jumping, wiggling, fast, slow, etc. 🪀
2- CLEAN litter boxes! cats are pretty sanitary-minded animals who thrive on routine. scooping at the same time every day creates consistency, and therefore comfort for our kitties! plus, scooping is a shorter & less daunting task the more often you can do it! 🧼
3- CONSISTENT mealtimes! again, cats thrive on routine. even feeding in the same 2-3 hour window for every meal can provide more comfort than cats who don’t know when their next meal is coming. feeding small meals at consistent times can also help cats who are prone to not finishing their food, as it builds anticipation and excitement. cats in the wild carry out a natural kill cycle more than 5 times a day—hunt, kill, eat, groom, and sleep. playtime right before a meal can help replicate the “hunt,” “kill,” and “eat” aspects of this, making the following grooming and sleep much more satisfying for your cat! 🍔
4- climbing & scratching OPTIONS! cats NEED to scratch, and if you don’t provide them the proper outlet to do so, they *will* find a place. horizontal cardboard scratchers are great, cheap, and easy to come by, but you also need to provide a STABLE vertical scratching option; if your cat’s weight causes the post to lean, slide, rock, or fall over, they are much less likely to be comfortable using it, and will likely choose your couch instead! climbing is another necessity for cats—they view their spaces both horizontally and vertically. providing a vantage point that can view the whole room has been most satisfying for my cats, especially when there’s a window nearby for them to watch. having at least 2 places where your cat can perch above your shoulder level for refuge, whether it’s a bookshelf or a cat tree, will make your cat feel more secure over their territory! 🐈
