The truth about straws
If your environmental stance hinges on straws, you’re aiming way too low.
Single-use plastic is a massive systemic problem. Corporations, overproduction, packaging waste, that’s where the real impact is. Not disabled people trying to drink safely.
Bendy plastic straws were literally designed as an accessibility tool. Taking them away doesn’t save the planet, it just makes basic things like hydration harder or dangerous for people who already deal with enough barriers.
Reusable ≠ accessible.
Eco-friendly ≠ safe for everyone.
And choosing to die on this hill—of all things—while ignoring the much bigger sources of plastic waste? That’s not environmentalism.
Disabled people are not the problem.
Ableism is. Capitalism is.
If we actually care about sustainability, it has to include accessibility. Not come at its expense.
