Make it less scary tips

Over the course of my life I have experienced about 5 transvaginal ultra sounds. They have been because I have had irregular bleeding as well to make sure I am not growing any fibroids like I have in the past. A transvaginal ultrasound consists of of a probe being inserted in your vagina to check more throughly your uterus and ovaries. Even though this sounds terrifying and I was scared my first time it doesn’t need to be that way. This is a medical exam that is most likely necessary if you’re getting it done and it’s for your better, so do not see it as a negative thing. Here are some things I do to prepare that have helped me a lot.

1. The more you know the more clear your expectations will be. If you’re reading this post it is a good start. I do not recommend doing too much searching if it causes you more fear only do it to have a clear understanding of what is going to happen. The exam takes about 15-20 mins I total with like 10 mins of insertion. If your doctor wants you to come with a full bladder follow the directions. This means you will also have an ultrasound done on your lower belly.

2. You will need to take off your clothes from the waist down. Because of this I like to bring comfortable clothing that is easy to take off and put on. I also bring an extra underwear just in case.

3. If this is your first time you might want to make sure you don’t have anything scheduled after. You might want to go home and shower And this is okay. Make sure you also speak up during the exam if your feel uncomfortable at any point. If you feel pain or anything. You want to make sure you’re relaxed as much as you can so if maybe having someone come with you makes this process less stressful do that.

... Read moreOkay, so we've talked about preparing for your transvaginal ultrasound, but I know what's often on people's minds is the actual moment you step into that medical exam room and what happens next. Having gone through this a few times myself, I want to share a bit more about what you can expect during the procedure itself, especially regarding the transvaginal ultrasound probe and the overall environment. When you walk into the room, you'll typically see an ultrasound machine with a screen, and often, there might be a female reproductive system diagram on the wall – which can actually be quite helpful for understanding what they’re looking at! The technician or doctor will explain everything clearly, but knowing a little beforehand can really calm those nerves. You'll be asked to undress from the waist down and lie on an exam table, just like a regular pelvic exam. They'll likely provide a blue disposable sheet or a blanket to cover yourself, which is a small but comforting detail. Now, about the probe itself. I know this is often the most anxiety-inducing part for many. The transvaginal ultrasound probe isn't as large or intimidating as it might sound. It's usually a long, slender wand, about the thickness of a tampon, sometimes a little wider at the tip. It's always covered with a fresh, disposable latex sheath (like a condom) and lubricated gel before it's inserted. This makes the process much smoother and more comfortable. The technician will typically insert it themselves, or sometimes they might ask you to guide it in yourself, which can give you more control if you prefer. Once the probe is inserted, it's usually moved gently to get different angles of your uterus and ovaries. You might feel some pressure, similar to a pelvic exam, but it shouldn't be painful. If you ever feel pain or significant discomfort, please, speak up immediately! Your comfort is important, and they can adjust. The technician will be watching the screen, taking measurements and images. It’s usually quiet, but don't hesitate to ask questions about what they're seeing or doing. Sometimes, they might point things out on the screen, which I always find fascinating and reassuring. During the roughly 10 minutes the probe is inserted, I try to focus on my breathing. Deep, slow breaths can really help. I also make sure to keep my leg muscles relaxed, which can surprisingly make a big difference in comfort. If you brought someone with you, sometimes just knowing they're in the waiting room can be a comfort. This isn't a race; you're allowed to take your time and communicate your needs. Remember, this procedure is done by trained professionals who do this all the time. They understand it can be an intimate and sometimes uncomfortable experience, and their goal is to get the necessary information while ensuring your well-being. So, take a deep breath, communicate, and know that you're proactively taking care of your health. And before you know it, it's over, and you can get dressed and head home for that much-deserved shower or rest!
