Ghibli Laputa Island
Tomogashima Island (also known as Laputa Island), Wakayama Prefecture
Tomogashima Island was part of the Yura Fortress, a huge fortress built by the former Japanese army to prevent invasion of Osaka Bay. It was a defense base to intercept enemy fleets. The island was equipped with cannons, ammunition depots, observatories, etc., and at its peak, about 600 soldiers were stationed.
However, there is almost no record that the Tomogashima battery actually engaged in a large-scale artillery battle with an enemy ship.
The reason is,
* At the end of the Pacific War, they lost air and sea control.
* The war ended before the U.S. fleet invaded Osaka Bay directly.
* Tomogashima played a central role as a "deterrent and defense base."
There is a background.
Therefore, many of the remaining artillery traces were not "destroyed in actual battle,"
* Dismantling after the end of the war
* Ammunition handling
* Years of weathering and typhoons
It is said that the 2nd Battery, in particular, was greatly destroyed by the post-war bombing.
However, at the end of the war, air raid alert and defense posture were strengthened, and it is a fact that the whole island was in a state of tension.
