Stay to hear God’s voice
It's a common desire among us believers, isn't it? We crave that clear, unmistakable whisper from God, guiding our steps and comforting our hearts. But let's be honest, sometimes it feels like we're doing all the talking, and maybe not enough listening. I know I've been there, feeling frustrated because I wanted God to hear me, but I wasn't always staying long enough to truly hear His voice and direction in return. That's a powerful truth I've learned on my own spiritual walk – the secret often lies in learning how to be still and simply sit in His presence. It's not about forcing an answer, but creating an open, receptive space for Him to speak. If you're wondering how to cultivate that stillness in your daily life, here are a few things that have genuinely helped me: 1. Carve Out Sacred Quiet Time: In our bustling world, deliberate quiet is a luxury. I used to think I could just squeeze in a moment here or there, but I found I needed dedicated time. Whether it's 10 minutes before the family wakes up or during a lunch break, find a space where you won't be interrupted. For me, it often involves a cozy corner with my Bible and a journal, perhaps watching a #godandsunsets moment. 2. Practice Contemplative Prayer: Beyond simply listing requests, try prayer that focuses on listening. I start by thanking God, then I quiet my mind, asking Him to speak. Sometimes I just sit in silence, focusing on my breath, and inviting His presence. It's amazing what comes to mind – not always audible words, but often a sense of peace, a gentle nudge, or a clear thought that wasn't there before. 3. Meditate on Scripture: Instead of just reading through chapters, pick a verse or a short passage and dwell on it. Ask God, "What are you trying to show me through this today?" I've found that when I slow down and chew on His Word, new insights emerge, and it feels like He's speaking directly to my situation. It's like finding answers hidden in plain sight! 4. Journal Your Thoughts and Impressions: This has been a game-changer for me. When I'm trying to hear God, I keep a journal handy. I write down questions I have, verses that stand out, and any thoughts or feelings that arise during my quiet time. Sometimes, what seems like a fleeting thought is actually God's gentle prompting. Reviewing these entries later often reveals a pattern or a clear message I might have missed. 5. Minimize Distractions (Especially Your Phone!): This one is tough, but crucial. I try to put my phone in another room or on airplane mode during my dedicated time. Our minds are so accustomed to constant stimulation that true stillness feels alien at first. It takes practice to quiet the mental chatter and truly "sit in his presence." Remember: "Sit in his presence and you will have all the answers." It might not be immediate, and it might not be a booming voice, but through intentional stillness, prayer, and reflection on His Word, I truly believe you'll begin to discern His voice and direction more clearly. Be patient with yourself and trust that He desires to communicate with you even more than you desire to hear Him. It’s a beautiful journey of deeper connection!
