Dementia parent with no patience
Where’s my food???😂
Caring for a parent with dementia can be an emotional rollercoaster, especially when they lose patience quickly. From my personal experience, one of the toughest moments is when simple activities, like waiting for a meal, turn into moments of frustration and confusion. For example, my parent often asked repeatedly, “Where’s my food?” or “What did I order?” which reflects their difficulty in processing the situation. Understanding such behaviors as part of the disease can help caregivers respond with patience and kindness. I found that maintaining a calm tone and gently reminding them about the meal or showing it visually can alleviate some of their anxiety. Also, distractions like engaging in a favorite activity or a light conversation can sometimes redirect their focus and reduce impatience. It’s important to prepare for these challenging moments by having clear routines and labels around meals and daily activities. Even labeling a fruit like "DRAGON FRUIT" clearly can help reduce confusion during snack times. Most importantly, caregivers should also seek support from others who understand these challenges. Sharing experiences and tips within caregiver communities has been invaluable in finding new ways to connect with and support a dementia parent who has lost much of their patience but still craves love and understanding.
