Learning how to de-stress is vital in residency! 👩🏾‍⚕️

We all know that the path to medicine is extremely difficult and there will be times you will get burnt out! Burn out is very real but recognizing the signs early and finding things (no matter how small) to bring you some joy to your day can make all the difference. For me, it’s talking to friends and family and finding times to unwind and just do nothing!

How do you try to avoid burnout?

Engaging with co-residents outside the hospital environment fosters camaraderie and alleviates stress. Regular social interactions can offer emotional support and help achieve a work-life balance. Incorporating mindfulness practices, such as meditation or yoga, during off days can help recharge mentally. Remember, it's vital to prioritize your well-being. Activities like leisurely reading, exercising, or simply enjoying your hobbies are essential. Don't hesitate to use your off days to rest without guilt. Seeking professional help or counseling is also an option if burnout symptoms persist. As a resident, navigating this demanding phase is challenging, but establishing healthy habits can make a notable difference in your journey.
