Gardening For Beginners 🌸

2025/1/28 Edited to

... Read moreHey fellow garden enthusiasts! When I first started gardening, I was so excited to just get everything in the ground. But I quickly realized that not all plants are best friends – in fact, some can really harm each other's growth! That's when I dove headfirst into the world of companion planting, and it totally transformed my little patch of green. It's like having a secret weapon for a healthier, more productive garden. Companion Planting: The Do's and Don'ts I Wish I Knew Sooner! One of the biggest lessons I learned was about what not to plant together. For instance, I discovered the hard way that you should not plant beans with onions or beets. Onions and garlic can inhibit the growth of beans, and beets can also stunt their development. So, if you're planning on growing a delicious bean crop, keep them far away from their allium and root veggie foes! And let's talk about peas. My peas were always a bit lackluster until I realized they're quite sensitive. A key tip is that peas don't like too much water once they've established themselves. Overwatering can lead to root rot and fewer pods. Also, try to avoid planting peas near onions, garlic, or gladiolus, as these can hinder their growth. When it comes to carrots, which are a staple in my garden, I learned that some companions are great, while others are detrimental. What not to plant with carrots? Dill, fennel, and celery are often cited as bad neighbors for carrots because they can attract pests like carrot flies or compete for resources. Keep carrots happy with companions like rosemary, lettuce, and radishes. On the flip side, some plants are true pals! I've found that potatoes and cabbage are friends. Planting them near each other can actually be beneficial. Cabbage helps deter potato beetles, and potatoes can provide a bit of shade for the cabbage during hot spells. Other great companions for cabbage include dill, mint, and chamomile. For potatoes, consider planting them with corn, beans, or marigolds to deter nematodes and other pests. What to Sow in March for a Bountiful Harvest March is such an exciting time for gardeners, as the soil begins to warm up, and we can finally get some early crops in! Depending on your local climate, there's a fantastic variety of things you can start sowing directly outdoors or indoors for transplanting later. Best things to plant in March often include cool-season vegetables. I always get my peas, spinach, lettuce, radishes, and carrots in the ground as soon as the soil is workable. These hardy vegetables can handle a bit of a chill and will give you an early harvest. For leafy greens, consider varieties like 'Black Seeded Simpson' lettuce or 'Bloomsdale Long Standing' spinach. Radishes like 'Cherry Belle' are super quick to mature, giving you almost instant gratification! If you're wondering what to sow in March for a later harvest, now is also a great time to start seeds indoors for tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and herbs like basil. These warm-season crops need a head start indoors to ensure they have enough time to mature once transplanted outside after the last frost. I usually use seed-starting trays and a grow light to give them the best beginning. And for those looking for what fruits and vegetables grow well together beyond the basics, remember that many herbs can be fantastic companions. Rosemary can deter carrot flies, while basil can improve the flavor of tomatoes and deter flies. Marigolds are universal pest deterrents and look lovely too! Experimenting with different pairings has made my garden not just more productive, but also a joy to spend time in. Happy gardening!
