Sustainable gardening, grow your own food!!

Happy Earth Day everyone!! 🌎

I thought I would switch it up and show you how I jumpstart my garden for the summer. Part of living a balanced and holistic life means knowing where your food is coming from and what better way to know than to just grow it yourself!

I planted these seedlings at the start of April and they were finally ready for a step up to bigger containers. We’re not quite ready to plant yet as we still get some cold nights here in April and even into May. But soon these little plant babies will be nestled in the garden and ready to bloom and blossom. For now, they’re tucked away in upcycled containers I’ve accumulated through grocery shopping. Every year I try to find new and different ways to cut down on the starter cost for my garden and this year takes the cake. I filled so many pots with brown matter (leaves, sticks, cardboard) and then put soil on top. I’ve also been using compost from our kitchen scraps.

Gardening is such a fun challenge every year and there’s nothing like watching a seed grow to give you perspective on inner growth and the passing of time.

🌎 Happy Earth Day! Go plant something!! 🌱

... Read moreAs more people embrace sustainable living, home gardening has gained immense popularity. Growing your own food not only contributes to a healthier lifestyle, but it also reduces environmental impact by minimizing food miles and packaging waste. Here are some practical tips to further enhance your gardening experience: 1. **Create Mini Greenhouses**: Reuse egg cartons or plastic containers to create mini greenhouses. This will help your seedlings thrive by providing a controlled environment that retains moisture and warmth. 2. **Utilize Upcycled Containers**: Instead of investing in expensive planters, repurpose items from your kitchen or recycling bin. Old food containers or cardboard can serve as innovative and eco-friendly planting solutions. 3. **Implement Companion Planting**: Maximize space and boost plant health by incorporating companion planting. Certain plants boost each other's growth, like tomatoes with basil or carrots with onions, creating a natural pest-repellent garden. 4. **Compost Wisely**: Transform kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost that will enrich your garden soil. By composting organic waste, you not only reduce landfill contributions but also enhance soil health, fostering better plant growth. 5. **Mulch for Moisture Retention**: Apply organic mulch such as straw, grass clippings, or shredded leaves around your plants to improve moisture retention, suppress weeds, and add nutrients to the soil as it decomposes. By embracing gardening practices that focus on sustainability, you're actively participating in the movement towards healthier living while contributing positively to the environment. So on this Earth Day, why not commit to planting something meaningful!

I would like to learn more! How do you use the cardboard? Just place it over the plants?? Or do you like the bins with cardboard, then put dirt, and then place the seeds in??
