What is Barium Swallow?

Difficult swallowing, sore swallowing, frequent choking, or chronic acid reflux can be signs of abnormalities in the esophagus that should not be overlooked.

Barium Swallow or Powder Swallowing Esophagus Examination is a diagnostic radiological examination that uses Barium Sulfate in combination with Fluoroscopy tomography to allow doctors to see the movement of swallowing and the shape of the esophagus in real-time, helping to find abnormalities without surgery.

What is Barium Swallow?

It is an examination in which the patient drinks a barium ray solid substance. The doctor then uses a Fluoroscopy tomography machine to track the flow of barium through the oral cavity, pharynx and esophagus to evaluate both the structure and function of the swallow.

The examination takes about 15-30 minutes, does not require surgery, and is an examination that uses low doses of radiation according to medical standards.

What can this examination detect?

Barium Swallow can help assess or find many disorders, e.g.
