How I act confident as a 26 year old nurse

Patients sometimes expect you to know everything which is impossible. These are some tips how I show my confidence as a 26 year old nurse:

Look things up before going in the room incase the patient or family has questions:

- Knowing why a patient is receiving a medication. For example if the patient is receiving antibiotics know why. Do they have an infection, if so where is the infection? What labs are elevated?

- Know side effects of medications incase the patient wants to know and it’s always good to know what you are looking out for. By educating the patient you feel more confident and this also allows your patient to trust you more.

- Look presentable- I always have a little bit of make up on and make sure I do my hair. By looking out together I naturally feel better and tend to act more confident.

... Read moreIn the fast-paced world of healthcare, confidence is key, especially for young nurses. It's vital to establish credibility with patients who often expect you to have all the answers. By preparing ahead—through researching medications, understanding side effects, and knowing the reasons behind treatments—you can enhance your self-assurance. For instance, if you're aware of why a patient is on antibiotics, and you can articulate the potential side effects, your interactions will be far more effective. Additionally, professionalism extends beyond knowledge. Maintaining a polished appearance can significantly impact how you feel and act in your role. Simple practices like wearing light makeup and ensuring your hair is well-groomed can foster a sense of confidence. Colleagues and patients will likely respond positively, creating a more trusting atmosphere. Confidence in nursing is also nurtured through continuous learning and engagement in conversations. Regularly discussing patient care with peers or attending workshops can bolster your knowledge base and comfort level. With these strategies, young nurses can not only improve their confidence but also elevate the quality of care they provide, leading to more positive patient outcomes.
