Dropping out of College to pursue Art 😬

2025/1/30 Edited to

... Read moreSeeing my boyfriend truly blossom after he dropped out of college to do art has been incredibly eye-opening. When he first made that big decision, I'll admit, I had my concerns. Like many, I was brought up believing a traditional college degree was the only path to a stable career. But watching him pour his heart into his craft and seeing the amazing pieces he creates, it's clear that passion and dedication can often outweigh a conventional education, especially in creative fields. For anyone out there contemplating a similar leap, or supporting a loved one doing so, I've learned a few things. First, while my boyfriend chose to forge his own path, there are many avenues to hone your artistic skills beyond a four-year university. I've seen friends thrive by taking intensive workshops, enrolling in community college drawing classes, or even utilizing online platforms for specialized training. These can be fantastic alternatives to traditional fine arts in college, often providing practical skills without the hefty price tag or the commitment of a full degree program. It’s not always about *how many years of college to be an artist*, but rather the quality of your learning and practice. What truly matters is developing a strong portfolio and continuously improving your technique. Many arts professional jobs and career opportunities in art and design prioritize skill and a demonstrable body of work over a specific diploma. Whether you're aiming to be a tattoo artist like some of the amazing people we see (my boyfriend is really into the tattoo art scene now!), an illustrator, a graphic designer, or a fine artist, your portfolio is your resume. Networking with other artists and professionals is also key. My boyfriend has found so much inspiration and even some early commissions just by sharing his work online and connecting with the art community. Of course, pursuing art as a career isn't easy – no one ever said is fine arts hard without a reason! There are financial uncertainties, moments of self-doubt, and a constant need to market yourself. But the joy and fulfillment of creating something meaningful, of turning a passion into a livelihood, is truly incomparable. It's not just about drawing; it's about problem-solving, storytelling, and connecting with people through your unique vision. So, if you or someone you know is considering leaving the traditional academic route to do art, know that it's a brave and potentially incredibly rewarding journey. It requires immense self-discipline and a proactive approach to learning and opportunity, but the results can be absolutely breathtaking. Watching him create, I'm constantly reminded that sometimes, the most unconventional paths lead to the most extraordinary destinations.
