History Made: Lumbee Recognition 🖤

I get asked all the time why my sons have long hair.

Why I don’t cut it.

Why I allow it.

Here’s the thing…it’s not about allowing.

It’s about honoring.

For us, long hair is sacred. It represents strength, spirituality, identity, and connection to our ancestors. It’s a visible reminder of who my boys are and where they come from as Lumbee people. Their hair carries history, even the parts that tried to be erased.

And TODAY… today is something we’ve waited generations for.

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has finally received federal recognition. A fight that our elders carried. A fight our parents carried. A fight that far too many didn’t live long enough to see fulfilled.

This recognition isn’t just paperwork.

It’s validation.

It’s acknowledgment.

It’s justice long overdue.

So when you see my sons with long hair, understand this:

You’re seeing pride where there was once pressure to conform.

You’re seeing survival where there was once silence.

You’re seeing a culture that refused to disappear.

Their hair tells a story.

And today, that story just got a chapter we’ve been waiting a lifetime to write. @lumbeetribencgov

... Read moreThe federal recognition of the Lumbee Tribe is a pivotal moment marking justice and acknowledgment after many years of perseverance. For generations, the Lumbee people have carried the weight of being unrecognized by the federal government despite their rich and vibrant heritage. This recognition not only validates their cultural identity but also opens doors for resources and support that were previously inaccessible. Long hair, as described in the article, is more than a mere tradition; it embodies strength, spirituality, and a lasting connection to Lumbee ancestors. Throughout history, Native American tribes faced immense pressure to conform and erase elements of their culture, including hair length and styles. The act of growing and maintaining long hair today stands as a form of resistance and pride, symbolizing survival through adversity and the refusal to let the Lumbee legacy fade. Federal recognition will grant the Lumbee Tribe eligibility for federal assistance programs relating to healthcare, education, and economic development. It will empower the tribe to preserve their language, customs, and ceremonies authentically. Additionally, this status helps protect tribal lands and sovereignty, strengthening their political voice. Understanding the significance of this milestone helps contextualize why personal and visible symbols like the long hair of Lumbee youth are deeply meaningful. They represent chapters of history that could have been erased but now shine with newfound visibility and honor. This recognition also raises awareness and respect for Indigenous communities' struggles and triumphs across the United States. In celebrating this historic day, it is important for readers to appreciate how identity, culture, and history intertwine in tangible ways. The Lumbee Tribe’s story of endurance and rightful recognition speaks to the broader journey of Indigenous peoples reclaiming their place and voice in society. Their long-awaited federal acknowledgment is a beacon of hope and justice for all historically marginalized communities.

This is beautiful now I hate I listen to family and cut my sons hair!!! My brother’s as well. !! Our babies had long pretty jet black we call it stomach hair. On if my sons has Sandy blonde hair that grew like a Mohawk. I cut their hair and it never been the same!!! My nephew literally hair was touching his butt and pretty jet back.! Our girls has that pretty curl jet black wth red hint kind hair sooo beautiful!!! But I hate I ever cut my son’s hair!!! We are Cherokee from SC/NC boarder my grandfather farther was German and his mother mulatto than my granny Cherokee but once married they became Mestizo. Idk a lot surrounding my grandparents and their parents up bringing I don’t think it was spoken abt much due to the hate in the area we are so they simplified it by saying mulatto and blacks. But my family are very beautiful some white as snow others black as dark and everything in between! I hate I didn’t get better understanding of our history before everyone passed on.! 💜
