Escaping the LA Fires
Fire is a force more powerful than any other. We have learned to harness it for our combustion engines and use the heat derived from it for our homes and food. However, it is our oldest enemy. Since the dawn of time, it has been fire versus human, and we continue to battle. This time, the war came to my community, Pasadena and Altadena. Our communities are an oasis in these difficult, rage-filled times. We are diverse in every way possible; we deeply care about one another, we stand tall for self-expression and non-judgment.
It’s been a city I’ve wanted to live in since I was in high school and had a crush on a boy I met in Jack and Jill. He was from Pasadena, so it had to be a great place. Then my husband got an engineering job here, the center of tech advancement in Southern California. I learned about her spooky past, her early integration, and her Black wealth. I was more enthralled than ever.
I’ve built so many beautiful relationships with the people and the land. Now she ’s burning. It tears my heart out. But we are Pasadena strong. We will recover because we always do.
The recent fires that have engulfed communities in Los Angeles, particularly Pasadena and Altadena, spotlight the perennial struggle between human life and the natural world. Fire, an ancient adversary, continues to challenge our resilience. While California is known for its beauty and innovation, it also faces a harsh reality with wildfires exacerbated by climate change. Evacuating during a fire can be a traumatic experience. It's crucial for residents to remain informed about evacuation routes and emergency services. Community preparedness is paramount, as it fosters connection and support among residents during crises. Building a network of support, knowing your neighbors, and having an evacuation plan can create a safer environment. The emotional toll of such disasters cannot be understated. Homes and memories can be lost in mere minutes, affecting the mental well-being of individuals and families. Therefore, creating awareness about the importance of mental health support during and after such events is critical. Resources and counseling should be made readily available to help those affected rebuild their lives. As we look to the future, the necessity for improved wildfire management and prevention strategies become increasingly apparent. These measures include controlled burns and maintaining defensible spaces around properties. Community involvement in advocacy for sustainable practices and environmental conservation is vital to combat the growing threat of wildfires. The spirit of Pasadena and Altadena, characterized by unity and resilience, will surely prevail in overcoming these challenges.
