Day in the Life of a Med Student on my EMS Shift!

I had the opportunity to schedule an EMS ride along shift on this rotation, and I couldn’t pass that up!

This shift gave me the chance to see what happens before patients are brought to the ED and it was really interesting.

I got to ride in the ambulance to respond to 911 calls and transport patients to the hospital, ride on the fire engine, hang out with the crew, and even watch one of their training drills.

If you have a chance to do an EMS shift, you definitely should!

After wrapping up my shift, I couldn't stop thinking about everything I saw and learned. It got me wondering even more about the incredible work done by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, the folks behind those sirens and swift responses. What really struck me was the sheer scope and professionalism. During my time, I saw various Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue ambulances, like the R302 unit, in action. It's not just about getting patients to the emergency department; it's about the critical care provided from the moment the 911 call comes in, often from the scene right up to the hospital doors. Experiencing the controlled chaos and the team's seamless coordination was truly inspiring. You see the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Headquarters and know it's a hub of immense coordination and training. I also got to ride on a fire engine, a massive "LADDER 2" truck, and even watch a fire training drill. Seeing firefighters in their gear, like those yellow helmets, practicing their skills really highlighted the comprehensive nature of emergency services here. It’s not just medical; it’s fire suppression, rescue operations, and so much more, all integrated to serve the community. This kind of intensive training ensures they're ready for anything, whether it's a medical emergency or a structural fire. If you're a student like me, or just curious about a career in emergency services, getting a ride-along is invaluable. My advice? Start by researching local departments, like the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, and look for their ride-along or shadowing programs. You'll usually need to fill out an application, sometimes pass a background check, and definitely be prepared to be professional and observant. Ask questions when appropriate, but mostly, just soak it all in. It’s a privilege to be there. Beyond the ride-along, I've learned that a career within Fort Lauderdale EMS offers so many pathways. From EMTs responding to basic calls to highly trained paramedics performing advanced life support, it's a demanding but incredibly rewarding field. The individuals I met were not just skilled professionals but also incredibly compassionate, dealing with high-stress situations with remarkable calm. This experience truly solidified my respect for all emergency responders and made me even more passionate about pursuing a path where I can contribute to this vital work.
