How do I study to get these grades in med-surg?

1. Pre-lecture: Have a template that has an outline based off of what you are tested on (patho, manifestations, causes, diagnostics, treatment, nursing interventions, and client education). You will study all of those topics with the disorders that are on your key concept list. Understanding the pathophysiology is really important with MedSurg/adult health courses. This will help you be prepared for class and give you a baseline knowledge on the disorders.

2. Lecture: during class have those notes in front of you with a highlighter and mark off important things that your professor talks about. For example, mark off hallmark symptoms, important medications or treatments, priority nursing interventions, and important patient education that you need to know. This will help with condensing your notes to focus on key information.

3. Post lecture: use your notetaking app on your IPad (I prefer Goodnotes) to create notes that are more focused to what you need to know. if you are a visual learner, try to make the notes more aesthetically pleasing for you.

... Read moreHey fellow nursing students! Building on the awesome 3-step method, I wanted to share a few more strategies that really solidified my understanding in Med-Surg and helped me nail those challenging exams. First off, let's talk about pathophysiology. The original article mentions it's crucial, and I couldn't agree more. Don't just memorize symptoms; understand why they happen. For example, when studying conditions like Addison's Disease, I'd break down the patho – the adrenal cortex isn't producing enough cortisol and aldosterone. This understanding then logically explains the manifestations (fatigue, low blood pressure, hyperkalemia) and guides the medical management (replacing these hormones). If you grasp the root cause, everything else falls into place, making even complex topics like Addisonian Crisis less daunting. My detailed notes on Addison's disease, covering its patho, causes, diagnostics, manifestations, medical treatment, nursing interventions, and client education, especially in a structured digital format on my iPad, were a game-changer for connecting these dots. Beyond just understanding, active recall and spaced repetition are your best friends. Instead of just re-reading your notes, try to explain a concept out loud without looking. Use flashcards (digital or physical) for key terms, medications, and nursing interventions. Apps like Anki can help with spaced repetition, scheduling reviews just when you're about to forget. This forces your brain to retrieve information, strengthening your memory far more effectively than passive review. Another huge tip for Med-Surg success is to DO practice questions, lots of them! Our exams are rarely straight recall; they're about applying knowledge to patient scenarios. Get your hands on NCLEX-style questions early and often. Don't just look for the right answer; understand why the other options are wrong. This is especially vital for med surg 2 exam 2 where questions often involve prioritizing care or identifying the most appropriate intervention. Practice questions help you think like a nurse and anticipate what your professors will ask. Finally, don't underestimate the power of connecting concepts and clinical application. Med-Surg isn't a collection of isolated diseases; it's about how the body's systems interact. Try to create concept maps that link different disorders, especially for conditions that share common symptoms or nursing interventions. Think about how a patient with heart failure might also have kidney issues. Visualizing these connections, perhaps using your iPad for comprehensive digital notes, with information presented in red-boxed sections for critical treatments like glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids, helps build a holistic understanding. Always ask yourself: "How would this look in a real patient?" or "What would be my priority if this patient were in front of me?" This approach makes the learning practical and sticks with you far longer than rote memorization.
