Nobody really teaches you how to layer skincare—and most people are just guessing 🙋🏻♀️
The general rule: thinnest to thickest, actives earlier in your routine.
But there are nuances depending on your skin type and what you’re using.

Layering skincare products properly can totally change how your skin responds to your routine. From my personal experience trying various products, the key is always starting with the lightest, most water-based items like toners or essences. These penetrate quickly and prepare your skin to absorb subsequent treatments. When using active ingredients such as retinoids or acne treatments, I’ve found it’s beneficial to apply them after a serum but before any heavy moisturizers. This allows the actives to work effectively without being diluted or blocked. I usually wait a couple of minutes after applying actives to let them absorb fully. Moisturizers come next, locking in the actives and creating a protective barrier. If it’s morning, finishing with sunscreen is essential to protect your skin from UV damage and prevent irritation from active ingredients exposed to sunlight. For those with sensitive or rosacea-prone skin, layering can be more nuanced. Gentle, hydrating layers and using actives sparingly or under dermatologist guidance helps avoid irritation. Also, if you use watery gel actives, applying a watery serum first can enhance the absorption and comfort. One tip I swear by is to observe how your skin feels after each product—if something feels heavy or sticky, you might want to adjust the order or the amount used. Patience is key; give each layer time to absorb instead of rushing through your routine. Overall, understanding the textures of your products—liquid, gel, cream—and their functions will guide your layering approach to maximize benefits and maintain skin health.
