DNR Author List:

โš ๏ธ disclaimer: this is MY personal DNR list. I am not forcing anyone to also not read these authors. That being said if I see someone post some of these authors itโ€™s an immediate block ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ โš ๏ธ #dnrbooks #bookwormsoflemon8 #booktok #bookshelf #bookrecommendations

... Read moreAs a passionate reader, I've learned that what we choose to readโ€”and who we choose to support with our readingโ€”can be a deeply personal and often ethical decision. This is where the concept of a 'DNR' author list comes into play, a term I've seen pop up more and more in book communities. What Exactly is a 'DNR' Author List? For those unfamiliar, 'DNR' in the context of books stands for 'Do Not Read' or 'Do Not Recommend.' It's essentially a personal blacklist of authors whose works an individual has chosen to avoid, often due to their off-page conduct, public statements, or problematic elements within their writing. It's a way for readers to align their consumption habits with their personal values and ethics. Itโ€™s important to remember that this isn't about universal cancellation, but about setting personal boundaries for one's own reading journey. Why Do Readers Create DNR Lists? Exploring the Motivations My own DNR list has grown as I've become more aware of the broader literary landscape and the impact authors can have beyond their stories. Here are some common reasons why I, and many others, choose to create a DNR list: Problematic Public Statements or Views: This is a big one for me. Sometimes, authors make public comments, express views, or engage in discourse (especially on social media) that are discriminatory, harmful, or deeply offensive. When an authorโ€™s personal ideology clashes significantly with my core values, I find it difficult to separate the art from the artist. For example, discussions around certain identity issues or cultural representations can lead readers to re-evaluate their support. Ethical Concerns in Personal Conduct: Allegations of misconduct, abuse, or unethical behavior in an author's personal life can also be a significant factor. For many, myself included, it feels wrong to financially or otherwise support individuals who have engaged in such actions, even if their books are compelling. The idea of contributing to their success when their actions have caused harm can be a real struggle. Harmful or Problematic Content in Books: Sometimes, the issue isn't the author's external conduct, but rather problematic themes, tropes, or representations within their books. This could include cultural appropriation, perpetuating harmful stereotypes, glorifying abusive relationships, or lacking genuine diversity and inclusion. If a book's message contradicts my values or causes discomfort, it's a reason to step back. Plagiarism or Unethical Writing Practices: Integrity in writing is crucial. Authors who have been accused or found guilty of plagiarism, or other forms of intellectual dishonesty, often lose the trust of their readers and may end up on DNR lists. Navigating Your Own Reading Principles: A Personal Journey Creating a DNR list isn't about judgment; it's about conscious consumption. I've found it incredibly helpful to reflect on what truly matters to me as a reader. What kind of messages do I want to support? What kind of creators do I want to uplift? This reflection helps guide my choices. The debate of 'separating art from the artist' is a huge one, and for me, it's a fluctuating line. Personally, I've had to decide if I can genuinely enjoy a story knowing the creator's actions or views contradict my core beliefs. Sometimes it's possible, sometimes the knowledge simply taints the experience for me. If an author ends up on my personal DNR list, it's an opportunity to discover new voices. There are so many incredible authors out there who align with my values and write amazing stories. It's an empowering choice to curate my reading list consciously, ensuring that what I read truly enriches my life and upholds my personal integrity.
