Skincare not working?

got a question about skincare mixing or derm concerns? Drop it in the comments for an expert derm answer ✨ I’ll respond as many as I can!

Most common mistakes I see:

1) Using tretinoin in AM or too early in the day. Goes on before bed.

2) combining vitamin c with other strong acids (glycolic, lactic, etc) and oxidizing agents like hocl

3) using oils and ointments first

4) combining Retinoids and benzoyl peroxide

5) skipping tinted spf

6) combining high % of niacinamide and vit c

7) not spot testing new products

... Read moreEver wondered why your carefully chosen skincare routine isn't giving you the results you hoped for, or worse, causing unexpected reactions? I've been there! It's confusing when your skin becomes red, itchy, or breaks out, and you're left guessing if it's a side effect or an allergic reaction. From my personal journey, I've learned that understanding the difference is key. A side effect, often called irritation, is a common and usually predictable response to a strong active ingredient, especially if introduced too quickly or combined incorrectly. Think of the initial dryness or peeling when you start using Tretinoin cream, or a tingling sensation from a high-percentage Vitamin C serum or glycolic acid. These are often manageable with careful application, proper layering, and gradually increasing frequency, as some dermatologists advise. An allergic reaction, however, is your immune system overreacting to a substance. This can manifest as hives, severe itching, swelling, or blistering, and it's usually less about how you use a product and more about a specific ingredient your body doesn't like. For instance, I once tried a new product and woke up with an itchy rash – a clear sign my skin was having an allergic response, not just irritation. This is when you immediately stop using the product. When it comes to common ingredients, many products designed for concerns like dark spots often contain potent actives such as Vitamin C, Niacinamide, or various acids. While these can be incredibly effective, they also carry a higher risk of irritation, especially if used incorrectly. The original article highlights crucial mistakes like combining Vitamin C with other strong acids or using retinoids with benzoyl peroxide – these combinations are notorious for increasing the likelihood of irritation and adverse reactions. My biggest takeaway? Patch testing is your best friend! Before slathering a new product all over your face, try it on a small, inconspicuous area for a few days. This simple step has saved me from so much potential skin drama. Also, paying attention to ingredient lists and understanding what actives you're using is vital. For example, the OCR mentioned Hypochlorous Acid – knowing how it interacts with other ingredients, like avoiding its combination with certain powerful antioxidants, can prevent oxidation or reduced efficacy. So, when should you really seek professional advice? If you experience persistent redness, swelling, severe itching, or any signs of a true allergic reaction, it's absolutely time to see a doctor. Your general practitioner is an excellent first point of contact. From my experience, they can help differentiate between irritation and allergy, offer initial guidance, or refer you to a dermatologist if needed. They can also provide valuable insight, especially if you have other health concerns or are on medication that might interact with skincare ingredients. Being prepared with a list of all products you're using, how often, and when you noticed the reaction, helps them immensely in guiding you toward trusted skincare solutions. Remember, even over-the-counter products are potent, and professional medical advice is irreplaceable for severe or persistent skin issues.
