That first whale watch boat ride was truly unforgettable! While seeing the majestic whales and playful sea lions was amazing, nothing quite prepared me for the sheer delight of those dolphins. It wasn't just one or two; there were dozens, a whole superpod, gracefully zipping through the waves right alongside our boat. They seemed to be putting on a show just for us! If you’re thinking about going on a whale watch, especially around the Southern California coast near the Aquarium of the Pacific, I highly recommend it! Many tours depart from harbors in Long Beach, Newport Beach, or Dana Point, offering fantastic opportunities to see various marine life. Here are a few tips I picked up that might help you have an equally incredible experience: Firstly, manage your expectations – wildlife is unpredictable, but most reputable tour operators have a good sense of where animals are likely to be. We went in the afternoon, but sometimes early mornings can be just as fruitful, often with calmer seas. Secondly, dress in layers! Even on a sunny day, it can get chilly out on the open water with the sea breeze. A jacket or windbreaker is a must. Don't forget sunscreen and a hat, either, as the sun's reflection off the water can be intense. Consider seasickness medication if you're prone to it, just in case! Thirdly, bring a good camera with a zoom lens, if you have one. While the dolphins were super close, you'll want to capture those moments, and a zoom helps for more distant sightings of whales or other marine life. Binoculars can also enhance your viewing. And keep your phone charged – you won't want to miss a photo op! It's fascinating why dolphins often swim next to boats. They are highly intelligent and curious creatures. One common behavior is 'bow-riding,' where they surf the pressure wave created by the boat's bow. It's thought they do this simply for fun, as a way to conserve energy, or sometimes even to scout for food stirred up by the boat. The common dolphins we saw are particularly known for their energetic and acrobatic displays. Seeing their sheer speed and agility as they matched our boat's pace was truly breathtaking. Being out on the ocean, surrounded by these incredible creatures, gave me such an appreciation for marine life.
