Week 4, Day 3| Why Is There Suffering?

Week 4, Day 3| Sharing Our Faith| Loving Others Through Evangelism| Why Is There Suffering?

Cancer. Death. Abuse. Exhaustion. Betrayal. Loneliness. Injustice.

If we live long enough, we learn that suffering touches every one of us. Even as believers — deeply loved and known by God — we are not exempt from pain. But in Christ, we do not suffer without hope. We wrestle, cry out, and cling to the Lord knowing that somehow, in ways we can’t see yet, God will use all things for His glory and our good (Romans 8:28).

For many who don’t believe, suffering becomes a major barrier to faith.

If God is good and powerful, why would He allow such heartache?

Often, this question flows from a place of deep personal pain — the loss of someone precious, trauma in childhood, betrayal, or years of feeling unseen and unprotected. The idea of a loving God can feel confusing… even offensive.

In moments like these, we must slow down. Pray for sensitivity. Listen deeply.

This is not the time to argue theology — it’s a time to be present. Like Job’s friends, the most loving thing we can offer is not quick answers, but our presence, our tears, and our compassion (Job 4–23). Love goes farther than debate ever will.

And as conversations unfold, it helps to start with one gentle, open question:

“Why do you ask?”

Suffering is almost always personal.

When you sense that someone has an ethical objection to the idea of a good God and a painful world, there are thoughtful, hope-filled ways to walk with them.

WHAT IS SUFFERING?:

Suffering is the deep ache that comes from living in a broken world.

It reveals itself through grief, loss, anxiety, conflict, disease, or disaster.

It’s the heaviness we long to shake off — the hurt, the lament, the internal groaning for something better.

It reminds us that we were not created for this kind of pain.

WHY IS THERE SUFFERING?:

Without God, explanations for suffering fall short.

Where did the world come from?

Why does injustice exist?

Why do cancer, accidents, and abuse reach even the most vulnerable?

Why do some flourish while others feel forgotten?

Scripture gives a deeper story:

Suffering is the result of sin entering the world.

When Adam and Eve turned from God, brokenness entered every part of life. “Sin” may sound outdated, but its consequences surround us — manipulation, greed, corruption, war, poverty, violence. Look around: disease, division, death. Something is terribly wrong.

And here’s the truth that anchors us:

God did not make the world this way.

He made it good.

He made every person in His image and provided all we needed (Genesis 1:27–31).

He gave us free will, and we chose to disobey.

God gave good laws for our protection, but we rebelled (Deuteronomy 1:1–4:43).

He defended the weak, but we despised the weak and protected ourselves instead.

And as we withdrew from our Creator, we detached from the very source of goodness itself.

Where goodness is rejected, suffering takes root.

But even here — in a world fractured by sin — God did not withdraw from us.

His heart has always been redemption.

TRANSITION TO THE GOSPEL:

In His mercy, God saw our brokenness and did not look away.

He launched a rescue mission through His Son.

The escape from suffering is not found in death, despair, or numbing the pain —

the answer is Christ.

Suffering often makes God feel distant, but the gospel declares the opposite:

God came near.

Jesus stepped into our humanity.

He entered our pain.

He endured betrayal, humiliation, injustice, and death — the deepest suffering imaginable.

He is not detached or indifferent. He is compassionate and present (Luke 1:77–78).

Through His death, He took the full weight of sin.

Through His resurrection, He shattered its power and opened the door to new life.

Hope is no longer fragile — it is anchored in a risen Savior.

And one day, God will make all things right.

Perfect justice. Perfect healing.

Every tear wiped away.

Every wound mended.

Every sorrow undone (Revelation 21:4).

Christ — the suffering, saving, present Lord — intercedes for us, sustains us, strengthens us, and draws near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 147:3; Ephesians 2:13; Ephesians 6:10).

If there is no God, then the suffering we see is all there is.

But because God is holy, just, and full of mercy, we have hope.

He will right every wrong.

He will heal every wound.

And in light of who He is, we turn from our sin and run toward the One who loves us most.

... Read moreSuffering is an experience that touches all of us at some point in our lives, manifesting through grief, illness, betrayal, and injustice. While it often feels isolating, understanding suffering through a spiritual lens can provide profound comfort and hope. The gospel assures us that God is not distant in our pain; rather, He draws near, binding our wounds and sustaining our broken hearts. This compassionate presence is evident in Jesus Christ, who experienced the deepest suffering — betrayal, humiliation, and death — and through His resurrection, overcame the power of sin and sorrow. When engaging with others who struggle with suffering, especially those who may question God’s goodness, it’s essential to approach conversations with empathy and patience. Asking simple, open-ended questions like “Why do you ask?” can invite vulnerable sharing and build bridges for meaningful dialogue. Sharing personal testimony and being prepared with a clear, brief explanation of the gospel can help gently lead others toward hope. Practical gospel sharing tips include being sensitive to the moment, listening deeply, and offering compassion rather than quick theological answers. Leaving behind a gospel booklet or contact information can continue the conversation beyond initial encounters. Partnering with a church community for follow-ups ensures sustained support for those seeking answers or healing. Ultimately, suffering reveals the brokenness of our world due to sin, but it does not have the final word. God’s redemptive plan promises perfect justice, healing, and the wiping away of every tear in the new creation. This hope anchors believers, reminding us that even in suffering, we are deeply loved and known by God. By embracing vulnerability and being present with others in their pain, we embody the love of Christ and invite them to experience the transformative power of the gospel.
