After my divorce I took myself shopping and bought more daring clothes and shoes that for years I was too timid to wear and I felt so much better. I grew up with scarcity trauma due to having limited resources as a child and young adult but then I realized that I was worthy of enjoying the things that I worked hard for. I started taking the tags off of clothes and taking the shoes out of the box and it was so freeing.
@Christian Louboutin thank you for creating so much joy for me. Look out for Part 2 👠👠
@The Devil Wears Prada 2 is the number 1 movie in the world because fashion brings many of us so much joy.
Shopping for a new wardrobe can improve mental health by boosting confidence, reducing stress, and triggering the release of dopamine and endorphins (retail therapy).
Studies on “enclothed cognition” show that wearing clothes associated with positive emotions increases self-esteem, motivation, and cognitive performance. It provides a sense of control and self-expression.
Enclothed Cognition (2012 Northwestern Study): This research found that the symbolic meaning of clothing, combined with the experience of wearing it, influences the wearer’s psychological processes. Wearing clothes that make you feel capable or “put together” actually changes how your brain functions.
Dopamine Boosts (“Retail Therapy”): According to a Cleveland Clinic Health study, shopping can act as a stress reliever, releasing “feel-good” chemicals like dopamine and serotonin.Routine Updates and Happiness: Recent studies suggest that updating a wardrobe regularly can act as an emotional refresh, reducing stress and enhancing mood.
Identity and Self-Expression: Psychologists suggest that choosing clothing that reflects your personality can serve as a creative, therapeutic outlet, especially for navigating life changes.

After going through major life transitions, such as a divorce, many people find that reinventing their personal style offers more than just a new look—it can be a powerful form of self-care and healing. Personally, I found that stepping outside my previous fashion comfort zone and investing in bold pieces like Christian Louboutin shoes made me feel renewed and in control of my identity. The concept of "enclothed cognition" explains why the clothes we wear can truly influence our mindset. Wearing clothing associated with confidence or positive memories can enhance motivation and cognitive performance. From personal experience, when I started wearing pieces that I once viewed as daring or out of reach, I noticed a real shift in how I approached daily challenges with more assurance. Additionally, the act of shopping itself can trigger a surge in dopamine and serotonin, the brain's natural 'feel-good' chemicals. This biological response supports the idea of retail therapy as a stress reliever. However, it's important to approach this mindfully—selecting pieces that reflect your genuine personality and values rather than impulsive buys leads to a more lasting emotional boost. Regularly updating one’s wardrobe also serves as an emotional refresh. It symbolizes growth and new beginnings, which can be especially meaningful when recovering from past hardships such as scarcity trauma or significant life changes. Removing tags and boxes from new purchases, as I did, symbolizes embracing deservingness and freedom from past limitations. Fashion, therefore, is more than aesthetics; it's a therapeutic tool for self-expression and resilience. The joy it brings, as depicted in popular culture like "The Devil Wears Prada 2," resonates with many because it taps into these deeper psychological benefits. Fashion therapy encourages us to celebrate our worth and reshape our narratives through the clothes we choose to wear.
