Everyone talks about maximizing productivity. I’m more interested in maximizing recovery.
High performers recover on purpose. So my flights include:
Hydration.
Moisturizer.
Eye patches.
Noise-canceling headphones.
A nap.
What’s one travel ritual you refuse to skip?
In my experience as someone who travels frequently, maximizing recovery during travel is just as important—if not more—than productivity. Flights, especially long ones, can be draining physically and mentally. I’ve found that adopting purposeful recovery habits transforms my travel experience and keeps me at peak performance. One habit that’s made a significant difference is staying properly hydrated throughout the flight. Airplane air is notoriously dry, causing dehydration that leads to fatigue and discomfort. Bringing a refillable water bottle and drinking regularly has helped me avoid that sluggish feeling upon arrival. Moisturizing is another simple yet effective step. The dry cabin environment depletes skin moisture quickly. Using a quality moisturizer mid-flight keeps my skin comfortable and refreshed. Eye patches have become a travel must-have. They help soothe tired eyes and reduce puffiness, making it easier to feel refreshed—even if the trip includes red-eye flights or disrupted sleep. Noise-canceling headphones are a game changer, too. They block out the constant hum and chatter on planes, creating a calming personal bubble that helps me relax or nap more easily. And naps—never underestimate the power of a brief rest. Scheduling a strategic nap during a flight can dramatically improve alertness after landing. These habits may seem small, but together they contribute significantly to my ability to recover and perform well during business trips or busy travel schedules. For anyone who travels frequently, cultivating these practices can help you arrive feeling restored rather than exhausted.
