Forgiveness Does Not Mean Giving Someone The Same Access They Had Before They Hurt You

5 days agoEdited to

... Read moreForgiveness is often misunderstood as an unconditional reopening of doors to those who have caused us pain, but in reality, it serves a much different and deeply personal purpose. From my own experience and the wisdom shared in this discussion around forgiveness, it becomes clear that forgiving someone is primarily about releasing yourself from bitterness and resentment that can weigh heavily on your emotional and mental well-being. When someone hurts us, the natural reaction may include limiting their presence or influence in our lives to protect ourselves from further harm. Forgiveness does not demand that we erase protective boundaries or revert to previous patterns of trust. Instead, it allows us to move on with greater peace, removing the toxic grip that unresolved anger and pain hold over our daily functioning. This perspective frame forgiveness as a proactive choice geared towards personal healing and growth. By forgiving, we are not condoning harmful behavior or engaging in denial of the past wrongs; rather, we are acknowledging the hurt and deciding not to let it continue controlling our reactions and future. This process can be challenging because forgiveness often requires confronting uncomfortable emotions and painful memories. However, it provides a pathway to restore your emotional balance and opens up space for healthier relationships, both with others and with yourself. In practice, forgiveness might mean redefining relationships and setting new boundaries. You can forgive someone without feeling compelled to give them unfettered access to your trust or life. This nuanced understanding empowers those who forgive to reclaim their autonomy and fosters resilience in handling interpersonal conflicts. Ultimately, forgiveness is a gift you give yourself—freeing yourself from the chains of resentment, bitterness, and pain. It helps to remember that healing is your priority and the essence of forgiveness lies more in self-care than in managing the other person’s behaviors or responses.

🤍 Asking for Forgiveness Is Hard. Giving It Can Be Harder.
Forgiveness is one of the most difficult things God calls us to do. Sometimes we are the ones who need to say: “I was wrong.” “I’m sorry.” “Will you forgive me?” Other times, we are the ones carrying hurt, disappointment, betrayal, or anger. And God gently asks: “Can you trust
