What a year! I finally started skating again in June this year. I’d intended to go back in April of ‘23, but my postpartum journey was rough and it took me a little more time to get back on my skates. But I did it!
I skated in a few scrimmages over the summer and finally got to skate my son around the track! A few friends skated him around last year, but I was so happy to get to do it myself. He loves going fast and giggled and squealed the whole time!
In September I got to skate with my team in my first bout since June of 2022! It was wonderful to be on the track again and it was a great game, even if we did lose. At the end of every game each team picks a jammer and a blocker from the opposing team to recognize for how they played - I won the blocker award!
In October we ended our season at an away game in Atlanta. Atlanta has INCREDIBLE teams and it was a fight, but we walked away with a win! It was a perfect end to my first season back.
The 2025 season starts on Sunday with our first practice of the year - we’ve had a couple months off and I absolutely cannot wait to get back on skates and back to hitting my friends 💚🖤💚🖤💚
... Read moreGetting back into roller derby after having my son truly felt like a 'rink coaster' ride – full of thrilling highs and challenging moments, but ultimately exhilarating! It's a journey I wouldn't trade for anything, a testament to rediscovering a passion while embracing new roles in life.
The first few practices back on skates, pulling on my #76 jersey, felt a bit wobbly, but the muscle memory quickly returned. There’s something so empowering about feeling those wheels beneath you again, the wind in your hair as you gain speed. Pushing my son around the track in his stroller during a scrimmage was one of the most heartwarming 'rink coaster' moments – seeing his giggles as we sped along, a tiny co-pilot in my derby journey. It really showed me that you can blend your passions with your new life, making new, cherished memories.
My first bout since giving birth was another peak. The adrenaline, the hits, the strategic plays – it’s an immersive experience that demands your full presence. The sheer joy of being back on the track with my teammates, feeling the roar of the crowd, was incredible. And honestly, earning the Most Valuable Blocker award, proudly displaying my MVB ring even with a battle-earned cheek bruise, felt like the ultimate reward for all that effort and dedication. It's a powerful reminder that hard work pays off, and sometimes, those little battle scars are the best souvenirs.
Speaking of exhilarating, our away game in Atlanta was definitely a highlight. The 'Atlanta roller derby' scene is legendary – their teams are fierce, fast, and incredibly skilled. Walking into that arena, you could feel the energy pulsating. We knew it would be a tough fight, a true test of our comeback season against formidable opponents like Peach State. The final score, Hard Knox 192, Peach State 167, tells only part of the story. Every jam was intense, every block counted, and every point felt hard-earned. The feeling of clinching that win, bringing it home against such formidable opponents, was indescribable. It truly felt like the perfect end to my first season back, a testament to how far we’d come as a team.
For any parents out there thinking of getting back into a passion, or even starting a new one, it’s absolutely possible. It takes planning, support, and sometimes a visible cheek bruise, but the rewards are immense. The roller derby community is like family, always pushing you to be your best, both on and off the track. The anticipation for the 2025 season is already building. I'm ready for more 'rink coaster' thrills, more hits, more strategic plays, and hopefully, more wins. It's more than just a sport; it's a journey of self-rediscovery and powerful camaraderie.
