... Read moreAs a mama of two girls, I'm always looking for ways to capture those fleeting, joyful moments. We live in Alaska, and embracing the outdoors is a huge part of our life. Lately, I've fallen in love with the idea of a 'mom daughter photoshoot' that's less about perfect poses and more about authentic fun – and what’s more authentic than a little messy creativity? I recently tried a paint-themed photoshoot with my girls, and let me tell you, it was pure magic! Instead of stiff smiles, we got genuine laughter, paint-splattered clothes, and memories we'll cherish forever. If you're pondering a unique way to document your bond with your little ones, here’s why a creative, messy photoshoot might be just what you need, and how we pulled ours off. Why Go Messy? The Joy of an Activity-Based Photoshoot Forget the traditional studio shots! When you introduce an activity, especially something as engaging as painting, your kids instantly relax. The focus shifts from "smile for the camera" to "let's create something beautiful (and messy!) together." This is where the real magic happens. You capture their concentration, their excitement, and those unplanned, heartwarming interactions between mom and daughter. We set up an easel outdoors with a big sheet on the ground, and it instantly became an art studio. Planning Your Own Playful Paint Session Choose Your Location Wisely: For us, being outdoors in Alaska was perfect. Natural light is your best friend, and you don't have to worry about paint getting everywhere indoors. A backyard, a park, or even a quiet spot in nature works wonders. Dress for Mess (and Cuteness!): This is where practical meets adorable. I dressed my baby in denim overalls – super cute and easy to wash! For my older daughter and myself, old t-shirts or clothes we didn't mind getting paint on were key. Think comfort and freedom of movement. Gather Your Supplies: You don't need much! We used a variety of colorful paints (washable, of course!) and a selection of brushes. Having a large canvas or even just big sheets of paper for each child gives them plenty of space to express themselves. Don't forget water for rinsing brushes and paper towels for quick clean-ups (or to embrace the mess!). Set the Scene: Lay down a white sheet or blanket if you want to protect the ground or create a bright backdrop for your paints and brushes. This also helps define their creative space. Embracing the Process: Capturing Candid Moments Once everything is set up, just let go! The goal isn't a masterpiece, it's the experience. Encourage them to explore the colors, mix paints, and just have fun. Get down to their level. Focus on capturing: Their expressions of joy and concentration. Paint-covered hands and faces – these are the details that tell the story! Shared glances and laughter between you and your daughters. The process of painting – the brush strokes, the mixing of colors. I found that using burst mode on my camera helped me catch those quick, unposed moments. Don't be afraid to get a little paint on yourself too; joining in makes it even more authentic. My younger one loved just squishing the paint, while her older sister was busy creating abstract art on her easel. Beyond the Canvas: Cherishing the Memories After the paint dries (and everyone is cleaned up!), you're not just left with beautiful art, but with a collection of photos that truly reflect the joy of your family. These aren't just pictures; they're snippets of shared happiness, creativity, and connection. You can even frame their artwork alongside a photo from the session to create a unique display. Doing a mom daughter photoshoot like this reminds me that life's littlest, messiest moments are often the most precious. It's about celebrating childhood, motherhood, and the beautiful bond we share. Give it a try – you might be surprised by the beautiful memories you create!
