Proverbs 16:1-6 offers deep insights into the spiritual life and the guidance of the Lord over human intentions and actions. It emphasizes the importance of humble reliance on divine wisdom rather than self-assurance. Verse 1 highlights that while we may plan our words and actions, it is ultimately the Lord who directs their success: "The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the Lord." This suggests that our intentions and spoken words are under God's sovereign control. Verses 2 and 3 remind us that human self-assessment can be flawed—"All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the Lord weigheth the spirits." Therefore, committing our works to the Lord with trust ensures stability in our thoughts and plans: "Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established." Furthermore, Verse 4 reveals God's overarching authority in creation, including the existence of evil for its appointed time: "The Lord hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil." This encourages believers to understand God's ultimate control over all circumstances. Pride is strongly cautioned against in Verse 5, where it is called an abomination to the Lord, reminding believers to maintain humility as a vital spiritual virtue. Finally, Verse 6 reflects on the power of mercy, truth, and reverence for the Lord in cleansing sin and steering people away from evil.
