1 Year on Ko Samui: Life-Changing Decisions
# lemon 8 diary /อำเภอเกาะสมุยIt's been a full year since I moved to Samui. Previously, my life has been circling Bangkok. I grew up in the province, went to university and started working in the capital. I lived in a constant rush. But at 30, I made a big decision - refracting my life path and moving to Samui, an island surrounded by new seas and atmospheres that I never thought I'd live like this before.
If I can go back in time, I still choose this path, because what I find outside and inside really changes my perspective and makes me grow.
The advantages of living in Samui 🌴
Nice weather, beautiful atmosphere - just walk out of the house and find a beautiful sea every day.
The local people are kind - friendliness makes living easy and warm.
Fresh Fruit from the Garden - Bananas and various fruits, purchased directly from the villagers.
Comfort - Although an island, living is exhaustive and not difficult.
Jobs outweigh neighboring islands - employment opportunities are pretty good.
A variety of delicious foods - both cheap and expensive to choose from.
Mental health has improved - the atmosphere and lifestyle here is like therapy.
New friendships - I made many lovely Southern friends.
Authentic Local Cuisine - Try Southern Cuisine That Never Met Before
Practice English - Meeting people from around the world makes sense that people everywhere have the same good and bad sides.
Selfhood - Here Not Forced To Dress Luxury. Use Expensive Things. Everyone Lives a Simple Life.
The downside of staying in Samui 🌧️
The cost of accommodation is expensive compared to the area outside the island.
High beam cost. Each unit is very expensive.
Travel requires a car or a motorcycle, or it will be difficult.
Labour and the social security system are still not very good.
Some items are hard to buy. Must be ordered online.
Travel costs off the island are high.
The airport has one. Expensive plane tickets.
Some of the people who come to work may escape some of the problems that make society diverse.
It rains often. If you don't like it, it may not be pleasant.
Lights go out often, especially during storms.
What I've learned
Despite the disadvantages, what I've got is worth more than that, especially better-than-expected mental health. Being among people of different nationalities has shown me that there is no perfect person in this world. Everyone has a side that does well and does not do well. We should not underestimate ourselves or insult others.
Moving to Samui allowed me to improve myself, to see the wider world, and to accept that imperfection is part of life. If the same environment does not improve us, sometimes moving out is an opportunity to start over.
For me, living in Samui was not just about immigration, but about growing up outside and inside, and it was a decision I never regretted. 🌊
