Places to Dust in Living Spaces

2024/6/14 Edited to

... Read moreI used to dread dusting, feeling like I was just pushing dust around! But over time, I've discovered that knowing where to dust makes all the difference. It's not just about the obvious spots; it's about tackling those often-missed areas that truly make your living room sparkle. After countless hours of trial and error, I've developed a routine that hits all the key areas, and I want to share my personal tips with you! Let's be honest, baseboards are probably the most overlooked area, right? But they collect so much dust, pet hair, and general grime! I find the easiest way to tackle them is with a damp microfiber cloth or even a specialty baseboard duster. For those really grimy spots, a bit of all-purpose cleaner on the cloth works wonders. I usually start at one end of the room and work my way around, doing a quick wipe-down every couple of weeks. You'll be amazed at how much cleaner your room feels once these are sparkling! My coffee table is a central hub, and it collects dust like crazy, especially underneath! Before I even think about dusting, I clear everything off – books, remotes, coasters. Then, I use a damp microfiber cloth for the table tops and bottoms, making sure to wipe down all the legs and decorative elements. Don't forget to lift up any decorative trays or items that usually sit there, as dust loves to hide underneath them. This makes a huge difference in the overall cleanliness of your living room surfaces. Oh, shelving! The bane of my existence sometimes, especially with all the little knick-knacks. My trick is to work in sections. Take everything off one shelf, dust the shelf thoroughly with a microfiber cloth (damp or dry, depending on the material), then wipe down each decorative item before placing it back. For books, I give them a quick once-over to remove any visible dust. It takes a bit more time, but ensuring your shelves decor is clean makes the whole room feel lighter and brighter. These spots are often forgotten but are prime dust collectors, especially if your windows are open often. For window sills, a damp microfiber cloth is your best friend. For blinds, I usually close them one way, wipe them down, then close them the other way and wipe again. A duster with a narrow head can also be super helpful for getting into those slats. Don't forget the window frames and door borders too – dust loves to cling to those edges! Beyond the obvious, there are so many other living room surfaces that need attention. Think about your lamps and light fixtures – especially the shades and bases. I always give them a good wipe. The fireplace/TV stand area is another big one, as electronics attract dust like magnets. Don't forget those high-up spots like ceiling corners and your ceiling fan! For the fan, I usually drape an old pillowcase over each blade as I wipe to catch all the dust without it falling everywhere. Using a long-handled duster can make reaching these high spots much easier. Having the right dusting tools really makes this chore less of a hassle. I swear by my collection of microfiber cloths – they trap dust instead of just moving it around. A good extendable duster for high spots, and maybe a small brush for intricate decor, completes my kit. Remember, consistency is key! A quick wipe-down of these key areas every week or two prevents dust from building up into a bigger job. Dusting might not be the most glamorous chore, but by focusing on these specific spots and using the right dusting tools, you can transform your living room into a truly clean and inviting space. It's so satisfying to see everything sparkle, and knowing you've tackled those hidden spots gives such a sense of accomplishment. Happy dusting!

Small spaces call for creativity
Let’s not be fooled into thinking that we need mass produced “organizers” from big retailers to organize our smaller spaces. We can often create something clever and beautiful by reusing what we already have, and by choosing secondhand goods. 🏡 For interiors with limited surface space, craft y
