Nursing is one of the only female-dominated healthcare fields out there, let alone in the world. Nursing school is rigorous within itself, let alone NP programs!!! People who go the online NP route most likely (can’t say for all programs) have clinical hours. Majority of nurses work through their graduate programs as RNs. We need more women in healthcare, especially WOC to correct the systemic sexism/racism within the US healthcare system.
As someone who has witnessed the transformative power of nursing in healthcare, I can attest to the importance of supporting diverse voices in this field. Nursing is not only female-dominated but also a critical frontline profession, where women of color bring unique perspectives to patient care and health equity. Clinical hours are essential for any nurse advancing toward becoming a Nurse Practitioner (NP), whether through traditional or online programs. Most nurses balance working as Registered Nurses (RNs) while pursuing their graduate studies, which demands immense dedication and resilience. It's crucial to challenge misconceptions and biases, such as judging nurses for quickly moving into NP programs after earning their BSN — judgments often rooted in misogyny. Encouraging and supporting these career advancements not only benefits the individuals but also strengthens the healthcare system as a whole. Moreover, increasing representation of women of color in healthcare helps address systemic issues related to racism and sexism that have long affected patient outcomes and workforce equality in the U.S. Healthcare systems that embrace diversity foster better communication, cultural competency, and trust between providers and patients. From my experience, mentorship and community support are vital. Aspiring nurses and NPs should seek out networks that affirm their journeys and provide guidance through rigorous programs and clinical challenges. By doing so, we can build a more inclusive and effective healthcare environment that serves everyone with equity and respect.
