Getting divorced doesn't cancel your CPF nomination automatically💔

So if you nominated your spouse years ago and the marriage ended, that nomination is still sitting there - quietly waiting. Your ex could still receive your CPF savings. Even if you've remarried. Even if you have a whole new family.😳

And here's the part most people don't know: a will can't fix this. CPF doesn't work like the rest of your money.📄🚫

The good news? Updating it is free and takes minutes.✅

... Read moreFrom my experience and observations, many people underestimate the importance of updating their CPF nomination after a divorce. Unlike marriage, which triggers an automatic cancellation and renewal of CPF nominations, divorce leaves the nomination intact unless you personally change it. This means that if you originally nominated your ex-spouse, they could still legally receive your CPF savings in the event of your passing, regardless of any subsequent remarriage or changes in family circumstances. This nuance can be surprising because many assume that wills or estate plans will cover all possessions, including CPF savings. However, CPF funds are held in a distinct legal category and are distributed strictly according to the nomination on file, not by will or the general estate. Even Islamic wills or faraid inheritance certificates cannot divert CPF savings unless the nomination is updated to reflect your current wishes. In particular, for Muslims undergoing divorce via the Syariah Court, the divorce decree processes property settlements such as harta sepencarian but does not affect CPF nominations. This separation of court proceedings and CPF Board administration means individuals must actively take steps to revise their nominations. Failure to do so risks unintended recipients, such as an ex-spouse, inheriting your savings. Updating your CPF nomination is straightforward and free, typically done online or at a CPF service center. Personally, I added this update to my post-divorce checklist after realizing how easily this crucial detail can be overlooked in the emotionally taxing process of separation. Alongside settling asset division and finalizing custody, updating the CPF nomination ensures your financial legacy aligns with your latest family structure. For anyone going through a divorce or even after remarriage, it’s worth taking a few minutes to review your CPF nomination. This minor administrative task can prevent future complications and ensure your savings go to who you truly intend to benefit. Sharing this insight has helped several friends avoid confusion and protect their loved ones’ financial security.

CPF is more than a compulsory savings system.
It runs on rules that can quietly support you, or quietly work against you, depending on how well you understand them. Small decisions around interest rates, transfers, and top-ups can create very different outcomes over time. Many people leave CPF untouched and only notice the impact years lat

You don’t need a lawyer to write a will. But you do need to make sure it’s done properly. Because if you don’t have a will in place, your assets will be distributed according to Singapore’s intestate laws — and that may not reflect what you actually want for your loved ones. In this video,
