August Reading: Family Trauma ❤️‍🩹📖

I recently picked up this book to begin working on my self-therapy + grief journey. As the daughter of an immigrant, I’ve definitely inherited some form of generational trauma. Without diving into too many details, I want to be able to grow in other areas of my life. During most of my life, I’ve had a hard time following my own intuition due to overwhelming anxiety.

I hope this book can provide some valuable insight on how to navigate certain experiences and put an end to inherited family patterns.

Title: It Didn’t Start With You

... Read moreAfter picking up Mark Wolynn's 'It Didn't Start With You,' I've found myself reflecting deeply on the invisible threads that connect us to our family's past. For so long, I felt like certain struggles – the anxiety that muffled my intuition, the difficulty in breaking old habits – were uniquely mine. But this book has opened my eyes to the profound concept of inherited family trauma, suggesting that what we feel, and even how we react, can sometimes be echoes of experiences that didn't even happen to us directly. It's been a powerful realization, especially as the child of an immigrant. Our parents and grandparents often carry stories of resilience, hardship, and unspoken burdens. These experiences, whether economic struggles, displacement, or cultural shifts, can leave an imprint that subtly shapes subsequent generations. The idea of 'breaking cycles of silence' truly resonates here. Many families, for various reasons, didn't have the space or tools to process past traumas, leading to patterns that are passed down, not through words, but through behavior, emotional responses, and even genetic expression, much like the intricate DNA helix design on the book's cover subtly hints at. This book isn't just theory; it offers practical insights into how these patterns manifest. It encourages us to look beyond immediate causes for our current difficulties and consider the broader family narrative. For me, connecting my own overwhelming anxiety to potential ancestral experiences has been incredibly freeing. It's not about blaming, but about understanding. This understanding creates a pathway for self-compassion and, crucially, for change. One of the most impactful aspects for me is learning to identify the 'core language' of trauma within my family. It’s about noticing recurring themes, fears, or physical sensations that seem to have no obvious origin in my own life. Wolynn's approach guides us to explore these connections gently, without force, allowing insights to emerge. This has been a huge step in my self-therapy journey, providing a framework to process grief not just for my own losses, but for the collective experiences of my lineage. Breaking these inherited patterns isn't a quick fix; it's a commitment to self-awareness and conscious healing. It involves developing new coping mechanisms, learning to trust that inner voice that anxiety once silenced, and actively choosing different responses than those modeled in the past. It’s about creating a new blueprint for future generations, starting with ourselves. If you've ever felt stuck in patterns you can't explain, or if you carry the weight of an unspoken family history, I highly recommend exploring these concepts. It's a challenging but incredibly rewarding path towards greater freedom and authenticity. This journey is about honoring where we come from while bravely stepping into a future where we rewrite our own stories, free from the unacknowledged burdens of the past. It's about transforming old wounds into sources of strength, truly 'breaking cycles of silence' for good.

I’m learning that a lot of the pain I carried didn’t start with me… it came from what I didn’t receive growing up. For a long time, I thought that meant something was wrong with me. But now I understand… I was never unlovable, I was just raised in spaces that didn’t know how to love me the right
