Raised garden bed

Cuban oregano was the star of the show and the raised garden beds this year. It spills over beautifully is drought tolerant and last all summer. It also smells amazing and can be used in culinary dishes. #raisedbedgarden #garden #elevatefarmsllc #herbgarden

... Read moreI absolutely adore my Cuban oregano, especially the variegated kind that graces my raised garden bed! It truly is a showstopper, and I'm excited to share more about how I keep it thriving, especially for those of you looking into 'cuban oregano plant care' or curious about 'variegated cuban oregano plant' types. First off, let's talk about care. While it’s famously drought-tolerant, proper watering is still key, especially when it's in a raised bed like mine where soil tends to dry out faster. I usually wait until the top inch or two of soil feels dry to the touch before watering thoroughly. Overwatering is a bigger enemy than underwatering for this plant! For sunlight, my variegated Cuban oregano thrives in a spot that gets plenty of bright, indirect light for most of the day, with a bit of morning sun. Too much harsh afternoon sun can sometimes scorch the delicate variegated edges, so finding that sweet spot is crucial. The soil mix also makes a huge difference. I use a well-draining potting mix, often adding some perlite or sand to ensure excellent drainage. This prevents root rot, which is vital for any 'cuban oregano plant'. As for feeding, it’s not a heavy feeder. I give it a diluted liquid fertilizer once a month during the active growing season (spring and summer) and skip it entirely in fall and winter. This simple approach keeps my plant healthy and vibrant without encouraging excessive, leggy growth. One of the most charming aspects, and why many search for 'trailing oregano' or 'trailing oregano plant', is its beautiful cascading habit. My plant just spills over the edges of my raised bed, creating a lush, aromatic curtain. To encourage this trailing growth, I occasionally pinch back the upright stems, which also helps the plant become bushier. If you want more trailing, let those stems grow! This plant is also incredibly easy to propagate from cuttings – just snip a healthy stem, remove the lower leaves, and pop it into water or moist soil. It usually roots up quickly, letting you expand your collection or share with friends. The 'Variegated Cuban Oregano' with its stunning cream and green leaves adds such a unique visual pop compared to the solid green varieties. It truly elevates the look of any herb garden. Aside from its beauty, its strong, distinctive aroma is fantastic. I often snip a few leaves to add to stews, roasted meats, or even infuse olive oil. It brings a unique, savory depth to dishes. Having this plant in my garden has been such a joy. It’s resilient, beautiful, and practical, making it a fantastic choice for both seasoned gardeners and beginners alike. Give it a try, and you'll likely fall in love with its charm too!

The easiest raised garden beds
The easiest (and cheapest) large garden beds I’ve made. For one garden bed you will need: -2 10x2x12 boards - 8 concrete retaining wall blocks That’s it. I cut the boards into 8 foot pieces which left me with 2 4 foot pieces for the width. Lined them up In the concrete blocks and voila.

An infographic titled 'WRONG DEPTH, WASTED ROOTS' illustrates optimal raised bed depths for various crops. It shows 6-inch beds for lettuce, radishes, herbs; 12-inch for peppers, bush beans, cucumbers; 18-inch for tomatoes, carrots, potatoes; and 24-inch for asparagus, sweet potatoes, and artichokes, emphasizing matching depth to root needs.
Pick the right height for a raised bed.
Every raised bed the same height means some crops get too little soil and others get more than they'll ever use. Each crop's root system needs a specific depth. Too shallow and roots hit bottom, fork, and starve the plant. Too deep and you're paying for soil that nothing reaches.
