How I Built My First Raised Garden Bed

We cleared out this space for a few months and today we finished setting up our raised garden bed. It feels so good to finally see it in place, filled with fresh soil and ready for planting( actually need more soil 🤣)

I picture lots of fresh vegetables in it already. I hope I can successfully raise some healthy greens.🥬

I chose to use the bricks and woods because it looks easier. In fact, it’s only easier to assemble. Carrying the bricks and bags of soil to the backyard was a lot of work.

But I’m still very happy with it. Can’t wait to plant and harvest!!!

Building a raised garden bed is an excellent way to start home gardening, providing better soil control and improved drainage for your plants. In this project, 12 brick blocks and 11 pieces of 4" cedar wood were used to create a sturdy frame. The cedar wood fits into slots on the bricks, making the assembly quick and secure, taking as little as five minutes to set up. For the base, using cardboard without plastic tapes or printed surfaces helps suppress weed growth while allowing water penetration. Layering the bottom with dried branches collected over time provides organic material that helps aerate the soil and retain moisture. Thorough watering of the cardboard and branches prepares the bed for the next step. The soil mix is key for a successful garden; mixing garden soil designed for in-ground use with cow manure supplies nutrients essential for plant growth. More soil may be required to fill the bed adequately before planting. Choosing raised bed gardening has many advantages: it warms up faster in spring, reduces soil compaction, and keeps pests and weeds at bay more effectively than traditional gardening. Using bricks and cedar also adds durability and a pleasing aesthetic to any backyard. Exciting steps remain, including acquiring seeds suited to your climate and gardening zone. Vegetables like lettuce, spinach, kale, and other healthy greens thrive in raised beds and are great for beginners. Regular watering, sunlight exposure, and occasional fertilization will help ensure a bountiful harvest that you can enjoy fresh from your own garden.

The easiest raised garden beds

The easiest (and cheapest) large garden beds I’ve made. For one garden bed you will need: -2 10x2x12 boards - 8 concrete retaining wall blocks That’s it. I cut the boards into 8 foot pieces which left me with 2 4 foot pieces for the width. Lined them up In the concrete blocks and voila.
