SAN DIEGO BEACHES

here are my thoughts on the best beaches to visit in san diego, coming from a college girl who has lived here my whole life!!

1. for a traditional-tourist vibe: visit la jolla shores! the surrounding area has plenty of local shops + restaurants, and the beach shows off the city’s beauty!

2. for a local vibe: visit windansea! still located in la jolla, but the area is less crowded and the waves are even better!

3. for a sunset vibe: visit sunset cliffs, obviously! the cliffs are perfect for picnics or dates, and although it isn’t a traditional sandy beach, there is plenty of adventures within!

4. for a party vibe: visit pacific beach! as a college student, this is the place to go for bars and beach days! this beach is still touristy, but not as calm as la jolla!

5. for a fun, family vibe: visit mission beach! home to belmont park and seaworld, this beach is guaranteed to provide a day full of activities for kids!

6. for a chill hippie vibe: visit ocean beach! a bit further south, but still fun nonetheless! the area is known for the farmers market and dog beach!

7. for a productive vibe: visit torrey pines state beach! the numerous trail options offer amazing hikes with incredible views, and the beach is generally less crowded! just know, some areas of the surrounding beach contain nudity!

these are the beaches i would recommend for people deciding where to stay or what to experience in san diego! #sandiego #sandiegothingstodo #sandiegolife

San Diego

... Read moreLiving in San Diego my whole life, I've had the incredible opportunity to explore countless stretches of our beautiful coastline. While my main list covers some of my absolute favorites, there's always more to discover, and I want to share a few extra tips and insights that I've picked up along the way, especially regarding some of the unique spots and general beach-going advice. One beach that often comes up in conversations about San Diego's diverse offerings is Black's Beach. It's renowned for its powerful surf and, notably, its status as a clothing-optional beach for part of its stretch. Reaching it can be a bit of an adventure; it's tucked away beneath towering cliffs near Torrey Pines, requiring a steep hike down (and back up!). The views from above are absolutely stunning, especially during a dramatic sunset, making the trek worth it for many. If you're planning a visit, definitely wear sturdy shoes, bring plenty of water, and understand the unique etiquette. It's a place where everyone generally respects privacy, so just be mindful of others. For surfers, the waves here are legendary, drawing experienced riders from all over. It’s definitely a more secluded and wilder experience compared to the more family-friendly or party beaches. Beyond specific locations, I've found that a successful San Diego beach day often comes down to a few key preparations. First, parking can be a real challenge, especially during peak summer months or sunny weekends. My advice? Go early, consider ride-sharing services, or look for public transport options if available. For popular spots like Pacific Beach or Mission Beach, arriving before 10 AM can make a huge difference. Second, think about timing. While any time at the beach is great, certain hours offer different experiences. Mornings are often calmer, perfect for a peaceful stroll or a paddleboard session. Afternoons bring more crowds and energy. And of course, the sunsets here are truly magical – I've seen so many dramatic sunsets reflecting golden hues on the water, especially from vantage points like Sunset Cliffs or even just watching from the sand at La Jolla Shores. The vibrant colors are something I always recommend experiencing. Finally, always remember to pack smart. San Diego weather is generally mild, but the sun is strong! Sunscreen is a non-negotiable, along with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. A refillable water bottle is essential to stay hydrated. Even on hot days, the ocean breeze can make evenings chilly, so a light jacket or sweatshirt is always a good idea. And if you're bringing food, remember to pack out everything you pack in – keeping our San Diego beaches pristine is something we locals really value. Exploring San Diego's beaches is truly one of the best parts about living here. Each one has its own unique flavor, and by venturing a little beyond the most obvious spots and keeping these practical tips in mind, you're sure to have an incredible and authentic California experience, just like I do!
