Do you love them or is it a trauma bond? 🌊

Trauma bonds develop through a cycle of emotional highs and lows that mimic the intensity of love but ultimately leave you feeling anxious, fearful, and confused. Unlike healthy love, which grows through consistency, trust, and mutual respect, trauma bonds rely heavily on fear and emotional dependency. One useful exercise I found was comparing healthy love and trauma bonds side by side, as outlined in Ellen Tift’s book. For instance, healthy love fosters your boundaries and supports your authentic self, while trauma bonds tend to erode these boundaries and create confusion about your worth. The fear of leaving a traumatic relationship can feel overwhelming, often triggering panic, guilt, or shame. This feeling isn’t a sign of failure but a symptom of trauma bonding itself. Recognizing and naming these patterns without judgment was a significant step for me toward healing. Rebuilding a sense of self-worth was crucial. I found that healthy love encourages growth and self-esteem, whereas trauma bonds gradually wear you down emotionally. Healing involves acknowledging harm when it occurs and committing to repair, which contrasts with trauma bonds where harm is often denied or blamed on you. If you recognize these patterns in yourself, remember that healing is a process done at your own pace. It’s okay not to be ready immediately or to experience mixed feelings. What matters is gaining clarity and taking small steps toward healthier connections. Engaging with supportive communities focused on CPTSD and trauma bond recovery, such as online groups or therapy, also helped me feel less isolated. Tools like journaling my feelings, practicing mindfulness, and setting simple boundaries became empowering. Ultimately, the goal is to learn to distinguish between love that heals and love that harms, enabling you to reclaim your emotional freedom and build relationships that truly nourish your mind and heart.
