What is the best and fastest way to learn Tagalog?

So I'm half Filipino and I was born in the Philippines (moved to U.S. when I was 3). And I've never learned tagalog before, I know a few words but I don't understand conversations and stuff. My mom who is full Filipino is too busy to teach me and my dad doesn't know tagalog. I'm moving to a place where there is more Filipino people soon and I want to be able to understand and converse with people (also because my family on my mom's side isn't good with English so it's hard for me to understand them and for them to understand me), one last thing, I am broke so no tutor is available for me. pls help me learn tagalog, thanks! :)

4/10 Edited to

... Read moreLearning Tagalog as a half Filipino who has grown up mostly outside the Philippines can be challenging, especially without easy access to formal tutors or dedicated family teachers. From my own experience and what I have gathered from language learners, immersion and consistent practice are key even when resources are limited. One of the best ways to learn Tagalog quickly is through daily exposure that fits into your lifestyle. Since you mentioned moving to an area with more Filipino people, make the most of that chance to listen and try to speak daily. Don’t worry if you don’t understand everything at first—over time, exposure to conversations will build your comprehension. Using free online resources can be very helpful. For example, YouTube has many channels dedicated to teaching Tagalog with practical phrases and cultural notes. Apps like Duolingo or Drops provide gamified Tagalog lessons you can do on the go. To practice conversational Tagalog when there isn’t a tutor available, you can join Filipino community groups on social media or local meetups where language exchange happens naturally. Sometimes, older family members might enjoy short and simple text exchanges or voice messages with you as a low-pressure way to practice. Additionally, integrating Tagalog into your daily routine helps retention. Label items at home in Tagalog, practice thinking in Tagalog during simple activities, or watch Filipino films with subtitles. Keeping a small notebook of new words and phrases and revisiting it regularly can reinforce your learning. Above all, patience and persistence are crucial. Language learning is a gradual process, but your motivation to connect with your family and culture will enrich your journey and make the progress deeply rewarding.
