The Intruder: A Review
TWO WEEKS UNTIL THE INTRUDER RELEASES ON 10/7 - here’s my review:
I received an advance copy of the e-book through NetGalley. Thank you for allowing me to read this book ahead of its release!
⚠️ I want to mention to anyone reading that there is child abuse in this book, if it’s a trigger to you - you’ve been warned. ⚠️
Now on to the good stuff!
First off, WOW. I am still shook up by the twists and turns this book took in the last handful of chapters. It is truly a slow burn with a lot of character building.
The FMC wasn’t a total airhead either. 🫣
Just when I think I know what’s gonna happen, hard left.
The book centers around Casey in a “now” timeline, and Ella in a “then” timeline.
Casey, a former teacher living semi-off the grid in a cabin has to hunker down for a coming storm…But things are not as they seem & she may not be alone. Will Casey have the skills needed to weather the storm?
Ella, lives with her Mom, an abusive hoarder and she has to find a way out.
I absolutely suggest everyone read this one ASAP. I’ll be doing a re-read for sure!

Okay, so you’ve seen my initial reaction to Freida McFadden’s 'The Intruder,' and let me tell you, that feeling hasn't faded one bit! As a huge fan of psychological thrillers, I'm always on the hunt for a book that can genuinely surprise me, and 'The Intruder' delivered in spades. If you're looking for a read that will keep you guessing until the very last page, grab your copy – whether it's the paperback or audiobook, you won't regret it. What truly sets this book apart is its masterful use of a 'slow burn' narrative. It’s not just a quick flick through; McFadden meticulously builds tension, character by character, scene by scene. The dual POV structure, alternating between Casey in the present and Ella in the past, is brilliantly executed. You find yourself piecing together fragments of their lives, trying to figure out how their paths could possibly converge, all while a palpable sense of dread grows. Casey, living semi-off the grid, isn't your typical damsel in distress, which I really appreciated. Her resourcefulness and resilience when faced with an unknown threat make her a compelling 'unlikely hero.' And Ella’s storyline, though heartbreaking with its theme of child abuse (a serious trigger warning for readers, as I mentioned before), is crucial to understanding the deeper layers of the plot. Many of you might be familiar with Freida McFadden's other works, like 'The Housemaid,' which also plunges you into intense domestic psychological thrillers. 'The Intruder' fits perfectly into her signature style, offering that same addictive quality where you just have to know what happens next. The twists aren't just thrown in for shock value; they feel earned, stemming from the deep character development and the meticulously crafted plot. I found myself thinking I had it all figured out multiple times, only for McFadden to pull the rug right out from under me. That's the mark of a truly great thriller author! For those wondering about getting their hands on 'The Intruder,' it's available in various formats. I read an advance e-book copy, but the paperback edition is perfect if you love the feel of a physical book. And if you're like me and enjoy listening while multitasking, the audiobook is bound to be a fantastic experience, likely enhancing the suspense with a good narrator. The book cover itself, often a key element for psychological thrillers, perfectly hints at the isolated, eerie atmosphere within. It’s a great addition to any thriller enthusiast's collection, visually complementing the chilling narrative inside. In conclusion, 'The Intruder' is more than just a typical thriller; it's an immersive experience that explores themes of survival, past trauma, and the lengths people go to for safety. It's a psychological thrill ride that I wholeheartedly recommend. Just be prepared for those serious twists and the critical trigger warnings. Happy reading, fellow bookworms!
