Have you ever been bullied at the gym?

Me and my friend are new to the gym, and last week we saw this guy acting weird. He cut off an older woman mid-squat, saying “slowpokes don’t belong here.” Then when we grabbed a bench (we’re new, so we were just lifting the bar), he walked over and went “Y’all here to take selfies or actually work out?” Next day, he did it again but this time he stood too close to a teen girl using the dumbbells, making gross comments about her form. I’d had enough so pulled out my phone, called the cops right there. He tried to play innocent, but the lady and the teen backed me up. Cops showed up 10 minutes later, talked to everyone, and ended up arresting him for harassment. Now the gym feels way safer. so guys, please know this, no one should make you scared to work out. Who else has stood up to a gym bully?

... Read moreIt's so heartbreaking to hear about what you and your friend went through, but also incredibly inspiring that you stood up for yourselves and others! Your story really hit home for me because, like you, I've had my own share of uncomfortable moments at the gym. It's supposed to be a place where we feel empowered and focus on our health, not a place to dread because of someone else's bad attitude. Your experience with calling the police is a powerful reminder that harassment is never okay, anywhere, and sometimes, you need to take serious action. But what about those everyday annoyances that don't quite warrant a police call but still chip away at your confidence? I've definitely encountered a few 'gym personalities' that made me want to run for the hills. There's the 'equipment hogger' – you know, the person who camps out on a machine for ages, scrolling through their phone, or using three sets of dumbbells at once. Then there's the 'unsolicited advice giver' who just has to tell you you’re doing it wrong, even if you’re perfectly fine. And let's not forget the 'stare-ers' or those who make you feel like you're constantly being judged. These might not be as extreme as a full-blown gym bully, but they can still make a newbie feel completely out of place and contribute to overall gym bullying vibes. I remember once I was struggling to re-rack some heavy weights after a deadlift session. I was exhausted, and a sign nearby actually said something like, “if you are too Weak to put the weight back, please ask the girl in front of desk to help you.” I felt so embarrassed, but instead of asking, I just tried to awkwardly manage it myself. Looking back, I wish I'd asked for help or even just taken a moment. It highlights how gym environments, even with well-meaning signs, can sometimes make you feel self-conscious. It's a stark contrast to someone actively trying to intimidate others, but it still shows how easily we can feel vulnerable in a gym setting. So, if you're feeling intimidated or experiencing anything less serious than harassment, what can you do? First, remember your value. You pay for your membership just like everyone else, and you have every right to be there. If it's an equipment issue, you can politely ask, “Are you still using this set?” or “Would you mind if I worked in with you?” Most people are reasonable. If someone is giving unwanted advice, a simple “Thanks, I've got my routine covered” or “I'm working with a trainer, but thanks for the tip!” usually does the trick. For more persistent issues, or if you feel genuinely uncomfortable or like you're being targeted by gym bullies, always talk to the gym staff. They are there to ensure a safe and respectful environment. Most gyms have policies against harassment and bullying, and they can intervene or even revoke memberships if necessary. Remember, creating a safe gym space isn't just about big confrontations; it's also about fostering an environment where everyone feels respected and can achieve their fitness goals without fear or judgment. Keep sharing your experiences, because it helps all of us feel less alone and more empowered!

this wasnt at the gym but i caught an old man taking videos of me and my friends everytime we went on the floor in a very inappropriate way. i made a face at him and he got up to leave so i marched off the floor, grabbed his phone and deleted everything. when he tried taking his phone back a boy stopped him and said “let her do this”. and he just had to sit there😭
