... Read moreHey everyone! I'm still buzzing from getting my YouTube Official Artist Channel (OAC) confirmed. It feels like such a huge milestone, especially as an independent artist trying to make a mark. I know many of you are probably wondering what exactly an OAC is and, more importantly, how you can get one too, so I wanted to share my experience and hopefully help you out!
What is an Official Artist Channel?
Basically, an OAC consolidates all your music content from your various YouTube channels (your personal channel, your topic channel automatically generated by YouTube Music, and any VEVO channels) into one single, official presence. It gives you a verified 'music note' icon next to your name, making your channel look much more professional and trustworthy to fans. For me, with my channel featuring @EmceeFishStix, it's a way to streamline everything and ensure my music is presented clearly.
Why is an OAC a Game-Changer for Artists?
First, it boosts your credibility. That little music note tells people you're a legitimate artist. Second, it gives you access to special artist features in YouTube Analytics, offering deeper insights into your audience and content performance. You can see detailed data on how your songs are performing on YouTube Music. Third, it simplifies discovery for your fans; they don't have to search through different channels to find all your official releases. Having 117 subscribers and 48 videos, I'm always looking for ways to maximize reach, and the OAC definitely helps.
How to Become an Official Artist on YouTube Music: My Journey
The process can seem a bit daunting, but it's totally achievable. Here's a general overview of how I approached it:
Have Existing Music Content: You need to have at least three official music releases distributed to YouTube Music by a music distributor (like DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby, etc.). These releases will create a "Topic Channel" for you on YouTube Music.
Own and Operate a YouTube Channel: This is your primary artist channel where you upload your content. It doesn't have to be massive; mine has 117 subscribers right now, but it's active.
Meet Subscriber Requirements (Usually): While there isn't a strict public subscriber count for OACs, having a decent base helps. Some sources suggest 3,000 subscribers, but many independent artists get it with fewer through distributors. My distributor initiated the request on my behalf.
Contact Your Distributor or YouTube Support: This was key for me. My music distributor (I won't name them specifically, but most major ones offer this service) submitted the request to YouTube on my behalf. They verified my existing channels and ensured everything was linked correctly. If you meet the criteria, they can usually expedite the process. Alternatively, if you have a YouTube Partner Manager, they can also help.
Pro Tip: Leveraging YouTube Features like Premieres
Once you have your OAC, you unlock even more powerful tools. One feature I'm really excited about is 'Premieres.' This allows you to schedule a live public watch page for a new video before its official release. It creates a real-time event where fans can gather, chat with each other (and you!), and experience your new music video together at a set time. It's fantastic for building anticipation and a sense of community around your releases. It's like having a virtual red-carpet event for your music!
Getting my OAC truly feels like a recognition of all the hard work I've put into my music. If you're an aspiring artist, definitely look into this. It's a game-changer for your YouTube presence and helps you connect with your audience more effectively.
