Succulent propagation 🤞

Really hoping my propagation attempt works 🥹🤞🤞🤞

... Read moreSeeing those first tiny roots and new growth emerge from a succulent leaf is such a thrill, isn't it? Like many of you, I started my succulent propagation journey with a lot of hope, just laying my succulent leaves on dark soil in a terracotta pot, crossing my fingers. But let's be real, sometimes things don't go as planned, and we're left wondering 'how to fix' what's going wrong with our precious propagation attempt. I've definitely been there! One of the most common issues I encountered was succulent leaves rotting before they even had a chance to produce roots. It's so disheartening! I learned quickly that overwatering is the enemy, especially in the early stages. My fix? First, always make sure your succulent leaves are properly calloused for a few days after removal. This lets the wound heal and prevents rot. Then, when I place them on the soil – like in that classic terracotta pot setup – I resist the urge to water them immediately. Instead, I wait until I see those tiny roots starting to form, usually a week or two, before giving a light misting. Using a well-draining soil mix is also crucial; even if it looks like 'dark soil,' ensure it's not holding too much moisture. Another frustrating problem is when leaves just sit there, doing nothing, with no roots or new growth appearing. It feels like an eternity! My go-to 'fix' for this is ensuring they get enough bright, indirect light. I found that placing them near a window with filtered sunlight, rather than in a dimly lit corner, made a huge difference. Also, patience is truly a virtue here. Some varieties are just slower than others. A light mist every few days once roots appear can encourage further development, but don't overdo it. Sometimes, the parent leaf itself might not be viable, so picking healthy, plump leaves from the mother plant is key for a successful propagation attempt. Finally, what about when you get new growth, but it's struggling, or the parent leaf shrivels too quickly? This can often be a sign the baby plant isn't getting enough resources or the conditions aren't quite right. My advice? Let the parent leaf completely dry up and fall off naturally. It's providing all the nutrients for the new growth. Once it's gone, you can gently pot the baby succulent. Also, ensuring your terracotta pot has good drainage and the soil is suitable for succulents will help avoid future problems. Experimenting with different light levels and observing your specific succulent's needs will help you 'fix' these issues as they arise. Keep trying, and those propagation successes will be so rewarding!
