I snipped my Venus Flytrap’s flowers (propagation)

Most people get excited when their Venus flytrap throws up flower stalks…BUT blooms in the wrong season can actually drain the plant’s energy. Vera Fang (yes, she has a name 💚) started sending up stalks in September, right as she should be preparing for dormancy. If I let her flower, she’d waste strength on seeds instead of focusing on healthy traps and surviving the winter.

So I made the choice to snip the stalks and propagate them instead! 🌱✨ By laying the cut stalks on damp carnivorous soil, I can encourage baby plantlets to form while keeping the mother plant strong. It’s a win-win: Vera saves her energy, and I get the chance at more flytraps come spring.

💡 Tip: Snip early, before buds open, for the best propagation success. Save flowering for spring, when your plant is rested and ready.

... Read morePropagating Venus flytraps by snipping their flower stalks not only helps conserve the mother plant’s energy but also offers a rewarding way to expand your carnivorous plant collection. When flower stalks emerge during the plant’s dormancy preparation, as seen with Vera Fang’s Venus flytrap, allowing flowers to bloom can significantly weaken the plant by diverting vital nutrients towards seed production instead of trap development and winter survival. To ensure propagation success, cut the flower stalks as soon as they appear, preferably before any buds open. This timing enhances the chances of the cut stalks producing baby plantlets when laid carefully on moist carnivorous soil. Maintaining high humidity and consistent moisture is crucial during this process, which is why using a self-watering pot and distilled water is often recommended to prevent mineral buildup and mimic the plant’s natural habitat. Additionally, placing the cut stalks on damp carnivorous soil replicates the flytrap’s native environment, providing the right conditions for root development. Distilled water usage and a moisture-retentive substrate help maintain ideal hydration levels without risking mold or rot. This propagation method is a win-win strategy: the mother Venus flytrap retains strength for optimal trap growth and dormancy success, while growers benefit from new plants come spring. Remember, flowering should ideally be reserved for spring when the Venus flytrap is fully rested and prepared to invest energy in reproduction. Monitoring your flytrap’s growth cycle and adjusting care routines accordingly will enhance both plant health and propagation outcomes. Engaging in this propagation technique not only deepens your connection with your carnivorous plants but also supports sustainable growth and successful gardening for beginners and enthusiasts alike.
