Dark soul art!

Hey everyone! As a huge fan of the Dark Souls universe, diving into my sketchbook to capture its essence is always a joy. There’s something incredibly cathartic about bringing these iconic characters and their world to life with just a few markers and a blank page. The challenging yet rewarding nature of the games often translates into the drawing process itself, making every finished piece feel like a small victory. For these particular pieces, I was really inspired by the rich lore and character designs. Drawing the Dark Souls 2 hero in full armor was a fantastic challenge, focusing on the intricate details of their equipment. I often find myself getting lost in the process of defining every plate and buckle, trying to convey that sense of resilience and struggle that defines the game. It’s not just about copying what I see, but interpreting it through my own artistic lens. And of course, Solaire of Astora had to make an appearance! His unwavering optimism, iconic 'Praise the Sun!' gesture, and signature sun emblem are just too iconic not to draw. I experimented with different color palettes for him, utilizing green, red, and dark blue markers to make his armor and emblem truly pop on the page, reflecting his vibrant personality. Working with markers in a sketchbook is one of my favorite ways to create. The immediacy of the medium and the vibrant, saturated colors you can achieve are just fantastic. I especially love how the pink and red markers can give certain elements a fiery or ethereal glow, adding a unique touch that I find harder to achieve with other mediums. If you're new to marker art, my biggest tip would be to experiment with layering. Start with lighter shades and gradually build up your darker tones to create depth and shadow. Don't be afraid to try blending colors directly on the page, or even using a colorless blender if you have one, to achieve smoother transitions and avoid harsh lines. Practicing on scrap paper can help you get a feel for how different colors interact before you commit to your main drawing. My sketchbooks are usually a mix of focused character studies and random doodles. You might notice little things like a castle tower or a whimsical purple house tucked into the corners of the pages, alongside some fun cartoon character faces. These little exploratory sketches are great for warming up, practicing different styles, or just letting off some creative steam between bigger projects. It’s all part of the artistic journey, allowing for both dedicated work and spontaneous expression. Sometimes, these small, seemingly unrelated doodles can even spark ideas for future Dark Souls-themed pieces!
