How do you feel about 4 double pointed needles?

Long Beach

... Read moreOh, the age-old knitting debate! As a fellow crafter, I totally get why you'd wonder about double-pointed needles (DPNs) versus circulars, especially when it comes to those cozy sock projects. I've spent countless hours with both, wrestling yarn into submission, and I've definitely developed some strong opinions and valuable insights I'd love to share! Let's dive into DPNs first. For many traditional knitters, DPNs are the go-to for small circumference knitting like socks, mittens, and hats. What I love about them is their portability and classic feel. You don't have a long cable to wrangle, which can be a blessing when you're knitting on the go. There's something quite satisfying about the rhythm of working across four or five needles. They're fantastic for small projects where the 'magic loop' method on circulars might feel like overkill. However, I won't lie, they come with their own set of challenges. The dreaded laddering! It's that slight looseness that can appear between needles if your tension isn't super consistent. Plus, managing all those needles can sometimes feel like playing an octopus trying to juggle. I've had my fair share of dropped stitches and needles clattering to the floor! But with practice, DPNs can create a truly beautiful, seamless fabric, perfect for the intricate patterns often found in sock cuffs or heels. Now, let's talk about circular needles, specifically using the Magic Loop technique for socks. This method has become incredibly popular, and for good reason! Using one long circular needle, you can knit in the round by pulling a loop of the cable out between stitches. The biggest advantage for me is that it eliminates laddering almost entirely, as you're always working with just two active needle tips. It can feel much faster once you get the hang of it, and there's less risk of losing a needle. Plus, you can often knit two socks at a time (TAAT) on one long circular, which is a total game-changer for avoiding 'second sock syndrome'! The downside? The initial learning curve for the Magic Loop can be a bit frustrating. That cable can feel awkward initially, and you'll spend some time getting comfortable with pulling the loop in and out. But trust me, it's worth it for the smooth results and efficiency. For my sock knitting projects, it really depends on my mood and the yarn I'm using. If I'm working with a delicate, fine yarn like some of those beautiful blue and green variegated skeins I've seen, and I want a truly traditional, tight fabric, I might lean towards DPNs. They give me a bit more control over individual stitches. But if I'm trying to whip up a pair quickly, or if I'm using a bulkier yarn for a super warm, comfy knitted piece, I almost always reach for my circulars and go with the Magic Loop. It’s also great for those "KNITTING PROJECT ideas" that involve larger foot sizes where DPNs might feel too short. My advice for anyone deciding? Don't be afraid to try both! What feels intuitive for one knitter might feel cumbersome for another. Grab some inexpensive yarn – maybe a simple yellow and white blend like the one I saw in a recent project – and try knitting a small swatch or even just a cuff with each method. See which one makes you feel more comfortable and confident. Ultimately, the best needle for knitting socks is the one that you enjoy using the most, as that's what will keep you crafting those amazing handmade socks!

I use interchangeable circular needles for everything. double pointed are too fiddly for me and magic loop works just fine for smaller circumferences. plus you can do 2 at a time with circular which is the only way I can actually finish a pair of socks or mittens

As a crocheter, I have a lot of respect for this scorcery 😂 I can’t imagine all of this to make a circle but the finish of knit is beautiful!
