Movies to cry 😢😭📺🎬

1. Pieces of a Woman, 2020

⭐️7/0

– Almost too traumatic to watch at times, particularly the birth scene at the beginning with the impending tragedy.

After this, you find yourself watching a kind of ticking time bomb. I wasn't sure what was going to happen, was it going to end in violence, more tragedy, the tension almost seeped through the screen.

I was not aware of. Vanessa Kirby before this movie, what an outstanding performance she delivered, she left absolutely nothing in the rehearsal room and gave a performance, as powerful as I can remember. She was very well supported by the cast around her.

Grief must never be swept under the carpet, this movie, as hard as it is to watch at times, delivers a very important message.

2. The Impossible, 2012

⭐️7.5/10

– I checked this movie out because of the actors, and damn did they deliver. Ewan McGreggor and Naomi Watts are superb, as always, but it's Tom Holland (in his first breakout role) that steals the show. Arguably, he's the central character (although all three of those actors take center stage at various times), and he easily showcases a star on the rise.

The film itself is a sucker punch. It hits hard and keeps you hooked either through suspense or heartache. One caveat though: this is by far the most intense and difficult PG-13 film I've ever seen. I'm sure it was rated R until it was toned down for the MPAA, and it probably squeaked by with it's PG-13 rating by only a hair. If you're have difficulty with reality based trauma or are in a headspace that might not tolerate this well, give it some time before you see it--it doesn't hold back what being in a tsunami would feel like. I actually thought it WAS rated R until I checked out the IMDb page.

Overall, this is a good watch and a story that should be seen.

3. All the Bright Places, 2020

⭐️6.6/0

– This movie absolutely moves deeply! While it has not adopted all aspects from the book, it does capture the overall sentiment wonderfully. The movie misses some parts I would have included. Such as in the end the long period Violet was waiting and received only small cryptic signs of life from Finch. And only the last of the five wanderings has been transferred into the movie, missing the other ones in which all the cryptic messages are understood and reveal the hidden sides of Finch's love for Violet. Some details have not been explained, for example the glasses Violet is wearing sometimes, that are her sister's. But apart from that it is a movie you enjoy watching, it evokes strong emotions. You feel love for Finch and Violet, you feel compassion and affection, and it makes you cry in the end. It absolutely has succeeded in portraying the exact emotions as meant by the writers. The scenery and the music is beautiful and the acting is captivating. It is a movie that will stay on your mind for quite some time after watching and to me that is a sign of a successful movie. It really goes to your heart. You realize - to quote Violet when she tells what Finch has taught her - that even the ugliest of places can be beautiful, as long as you take the time to look.

4. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, 2020

⭐️6.9/10

– I didn't really know much about this movie going in so i was surprised to find out that it was based on a play but after watching it you can see that fact from a mile off.

The film is soaked in play-like monologues and limited sets and the framing. It works so well. It is such a dialogue heavy movie that it could run the risk of being a little bit slow but it is just that well acted and the dynamics and topics are so well thought out that you find time flying by while watching.

5. To the Bone, 2017

⭐️6.8/10

– I am male, fat and old, yet I understood this movie. Not wanting to eat never made sense to me. Seems like the simplest problem to solve, I mean I eat pretty much non-stop and the idea of not wanting to eat is not easy to relate to for me. But I empathized with these characters. They weren't caricatures, and they weren't dumbed down. There was no pat ending, but that reflects the reality of anorexia in real-life.

I was especially entranced with Lily Collins and Alex Sharp. Both seemed like wise old adults in many ways until they would show images of their gaunt bodies and they are nothing but children.

I know a movie like this can only give a glimpse it this problem, but seeing humans I could relate to go through these problems made it more real than reading an article or a book.

I highly recommend this movie.

... Read moreIt's funny, isn't it? Sometimes, after a long week or when you just need to feel something deeply, there's nothing quite like settling down with a movie that promises a good cry. For me, these emotional journeys aren't just about sadness; they're about catharsis, empathy, and connecting with the profound human experience that cinema so beautifully portrays. The films I shared earlier truly resonated with me, pushing boundaries on themes of grief, resilience, and even the silent battles of mental health. Building on that, I often find myself drawn to emotional family movies. There’s something universally powerful about stories centered around family bonds, challenges, and ultimate triumphs or heartbreaks. 'The Impossible,' from the list, is a prime example – the sheer terror and the unwavering hope of a family separated by a disaster is just gut-wrenching. But if you're looking for more in this vein, I'd highly recommend 'Room,' which explores a mother and son's incredible bond in unimaginable circumstances, or even the classic 'Kramer vs. Kramer' for a look at family dynamics and loss from an earlier era. These narratives often make us reflect on our own relationships and what truly matters. Speaking of old movies that made me cry, there are timeless Hollywood dramas that continue to hold immense power. Think about films like 'Schindler's List' – not just a historical masterpiece, but a profoundly moving testament to humanity amidst unimaginable horror. Or 'Sophie's Choice,' which expertly delves into impossible decisions and the lasting scars of trauma. These aren't just 'sad movies'; they're iconic pieces of cinema that challenge us, make us think, and yes, bring tears to our eyes, showcasing the incredible range of human emotion that Hollywood movies can capture. Many of these older gems are surprisingly accessible on various streaming platforms now, making it easier than ever to discover them. What makes a movie truly make you cry? For me, it's often the raw, authentic performances, characters you deeply connect with, and a story that feels incredibly real, even if it's fictional. Films like 'To the Bone,' which sensitively portrays the struggles of eating disorders, or 'All the Bright Places,' which handles mental health with such tenderness, are powerful because they tackle difficult subjects with honesty and compassion. They remind us that it’s okay to feel deeply, and that sometimes, a good cry is exactly what we need to process our own emotions or to simply feel less alone. I love how film can open our eyes to different perspectives and experiences, whether it's through a harrowing survival story or a quiet character study. So next time you're scrolling through Netflix or your favorite streaming service, and you're in the mood for something truly impactful, consider diving into one of these emotional dramas. You might just find a new favorite that stays with you long after the credits roll.
