Leaving the Beauty Industry
This industry has given me a lot, but it has also truly taken a lot. I’ve gone back in fourth whether or not I truly felt like being a hair stylist was for me since the beginning, but there was a lot i fell in love with, and a lot I was able to overcome. It was hard to step away after 3 years of working my ass off to get where I am now, I can’t Imagine someone who have been in the industry over a decade and feels this way. Ultimately, in the end this industry is just so tough to start out in. The pressure on new stylists is unreal and anxiety has played a major role in my decision to take a step back. Do I think I will be done with it forever? Probably not, but I definitely need to work on myself and my mental health before returning.
Some things I wish I knew from the start of breaking into the industry:
🎀The pressure for new stylists that comes from social media is also insane.
🎀There’s just a lot of toxicity and it has me feeling burnt out!
🎀You need to hustle, and your paycheck will not always reflect that.
🎀It’s difficult not to be overly critical of yourself and not let work consume you.
🎀You are dealing with so many different types of energy throughout the day, and it’s overwhelming.
🎀It won’t be as flexible of a schedule as you think.
🎀Starting as an assistant is helpful but can also feel demeaning , and sometimes you get stuck in that role.
🎀Not every client will like you, and it’s okay.
With all that being said I’m still grateful for my experiences and the relationships I have made. I will still be continuing as a freelancing MUA, but if you feel like something is no longer serving you, walk away even when it’s hard. Stylists, take care of yourselves, this sh*t isn’t easy🤍
