... Read moreHey flower lovers! I've been getting so many questions about how I get my pressed flowers to look so beautiful and last so long, especially when it comes to those precious wedding bouquets. Well, today I'm spilling my secrets, and guess what? A lot of it comes down to a simple kitchen staple: wax paper! Many of you ask, 'Can you really use wax paper to press flowers?' And my answer is a resounding YES! It’s one of my favorite, most accessible methods, and it works wonderfully for keeping moisture away from your blooms while they flatten. This is especially important for preserving certain wedding flowers that you want to cherish forever. I’ve found it’s a fantastic alternative if you don’t have a fancy flower press kit readily available. Here’s my step-by-step explanation on how to press flowers with wax paper: Choose Your Blooms Wisely: Pick fresh, dry flowers, ideally in the morning after the dew has evaporated. Flat flowers like daisies, pansies, or single-petal roses work best. If you're pressing a wedding bouquet, gently deconstruct it and select individual petals or smaller, flatter pieces. Prepare Your Station: You’ll need a heavy book (old encyclopedias are perfect!), a few sheets of plain paper (like blotting paper or even coffee filters), and, of course, wax paper. The Wax Paper Sandwich: Lay down a piece of plain paper, then place a sheet of wax paper on top. Arrange your flowers on the wax paper, making sure they don't overlap. I always try to spread out the petals carefully to get the best shape. Another Layer: Place another sheet of wax paper over your flowers, followed by another sheet of plain paper. This 'paper-wax-flower-wax-paper' sandwich helps absorb moisture and protects your books. Press It Down: Carefully close your heavy book over the sandwich. For extra pressure, stack more books on top. The key here is consistent, firm pressure. Patience is Key: Leave your flowers to press for 2-4 weeks. Resist the urge to peek too often! I usually check them after a week to replace the plain paper if it feels damp, which helps prevent browning. Speaking of browning, a common concern is, 'How to press flowers without turning brown?' The secret lies in removing moisture quickly and completely. Using fresh, dry flowers, changing the absorbent paper, and ensuring good air circulation (if using a traditional press) are crucial. The wax paper method, with its moisture-wicking properties, really helps here. For those quick presses, you might have heard about 'ironing flowers in wax paper.' This is a faster method, but it requires more caution. You essentially create the same wax paper sandwich, but instead of a book, you use a warm (not hot!) iron. Place a thin cloth over your sandwich and press gently for 10-15 seconds, lifting and moving the iron. Be careful not to scorch them! This method is great for thinner petals but might not be ideal for thicker wedding flowers, as it can sometimes make them brittle. Beyond wax paper, don't forget the classic method: just collecting some flowers and keeping them in your books directly. While it works, the wax paper offers better protection and moisture control. You can also press other delicate items like natural pressed ferns – they look stunning in frames! Ultimately, whether you're preserving a cherished wedding bouquet or just enjoying the simple beauty of pressed daisies from your garden, the art of flower pressing is incredibly rewarding. It's all about experimenting and finding what works best for your blooms. Happy pressing!
