... Read moreVisiting the House of Tan Yeok Nee is more than just a tour—it's a deep dive into the cultural heart of Singapore’s Teochew community. This mansion, famously known as the last of the four grand mansions in Singapore, offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness exquisite craftsmanship such as the Qiàn cí technique, which involves artfully embedding cut porcelain shards into panels for a decorative effect. Beyond admiring the architecture, I highly recommend trying the traditional Teochew kuehs and TCM-inspired ice cream served during the open house. These treats provide a taste of the local heritage that complements the visual and historical experience perfectly. The live talks and performances truly brought the culture to life, creating an immersive ambiance. Photographers and culture enthusiasts alike will find every corner of the mansion a perfect snapshot of old Singapore, blending artistry with history. Located at Penang Road, this National Monument’s open house is a rare chance to step inside what was once home to a prosperous tycoon, revealing stories of prosperity and peace through its stunning mural paintings. If you have plans to explore other notable spots, consider pairing this visit with nearby hidden gems in the city to enrich your weekend cultural adventure. Also, keep an eye out for the modern Japanese restaurant recently opened within the mansion’s vicinity, blending contemporary dining with historical ambiance for a full sensory experience.
